  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

A Different Use Of The Word "Freedom"

Quatona I'm interested to know: do you have practical experience of you or others using your approach effectively? Or is it just theory? Roonwit

A Different Use Of The Word "Freedom"

No, on the contrary, I am saying that just because they feel unable does not mean they are unable. Someone who is looking for a way out of a problem already knows there is something wrong with them. What they are trying to find out is what that is and how they can change it. The way in which...

A Different Use Of The Word "Freedom"

Yes, but you are elevating that feeling to the level of fact, justifying the assumption that because they feel unable they are unable. I suggest that it is better to challenge that assumption. You can make a decision if you want to. Not making a decision is a matter of not wanting to, not of...

    The source of moral obligation

Surely the best it could be is meaningless happiness and joy. Could you clarify what you understand by the term 'meaning' here and where meaning comes from? Does it have any kind of objective reality? Roonwit

A Different Use Of The Word "Freedom"

Quatona The problem I have with your definition is that is seems to justify a defeatist attitude if a person struggles to make some kind of change in their life. They can say to themselves, "Well, I'm just not able to do it, so I shouldn't bother trying." However, this is often proved to be...

Why don't Christians keep the Old Law?

This is a good question. I'm not sure I have a complete answer, but I will make some observations that may be a start in the direction of an answer. Firstly, we must ask what is meant by 'fulfil'. The Greek word is plerosai, which has the connotation of 'complete' or 'perfect'. This...

    Did I made a vow?

I don't know much about OCD, so if this is a really important part of what's forming your question then a mental health professional may be a better person to guide you, and that on a personal basis rather than on the internet. However, from a theological point of view, the Bible seems to make...

    Opposing views of "yom"

Well, the discussion kind of comes to a halt if we disagree here. If the Flood was local then we should be able to identify the places described, as you have sought to. If it was global, we won't be able to. I would just say, when the writer says "All the high hills under the entire heavens...

    Opposing views of "yom"

I agree this is important, but I don't think the conclusions you have drawn are justified. As you note below, the words in Gen 2 appear to refer to cultivated plants. Therefore, it is perfectly reasonable to suppose that plants in general were created on Day 3, but by the time man was created...

    Questions for atheists / agnostics

Sorry. 'Detente' was the term used to describe the attempt of the USA and USSR to ease tensions between them during the Cold War, and is now generally applied to any attempt to ease political tensions. Since, in my experience, the relations between Christians and atheists are often pretty...

    Questions for atheists / agnostics

Quite so. I've been really pleased at the openness of the responses I've received. That's probably an inevitable risk when one embarks on detente ;) Roonwit

If God manifested himself, how would you know that it was God?

Not so. The vast majority of claims made leave absolutely no evidence to explain. But this is one that does, and so we have to explain it. Eastern religions don't rely on historical truth claims. For Islam, the only historical truth claim I really need to cast doubt on is that the...

    Questions for atheists / agnostics

I have been very careful not to say that. What I said was that I cannot find a consistent rational basis for their doing so. Roonwit
