  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

For the 5th largest denomination in America, this is an awfully quiet forum. ELCA

The history of the merger, especially in Canada was contentious time for Lutherans. In the US it was more bombastic. The issue that drove the wedge between differing theologies was women's ordination. And in the US, LCA members openly proclaimed that the Bible didn't matter in this regard...

For the 5th largest denomination in America, this is an awfully quiet forum. ELCA

Well, this ELCICer is coming back... seminary has been particularly busy and I have barely had time to visit. Anyways, I wouldn't put it that way. My simple version would be Conservative Lutherans tend to be overly loud about what it means to be Confessional. My more complicated version...

A political thread for ELCA people

I am anti-abortion as well, but I verge on economic socialism (its those Norwegian Lutheran ancestors). I think Row v Wade is a travesty and while we have abortion here in Canada, it is definitely more controlled. That being said, it is not the abortion laws that cause abortions. Rather it is...

what are some ELCA arguments for open communion?

I have been busy with my final year of seminary in the past months, but I stil check in here. This interpretation of 1 Cor 11 make even more sense considering Paul goes on to talk about the gifts of the body in Chapter 12. Remember, that he didn't divide his letters into chapters, those...

A political thread for ELCA people

That sounds very Canadian. We like our health care and don't like killing people. But many convservatives here would be right in step with you. Actually you would fall in line with the Conservative party of Canada. And with the western part of the ELCIC, which has distinctions from the ELCA.

    Communion in Lutheran Churches

In an ELCA/ ELCIC brand of Lutheran Church, you would be allowed to commune if you 1. Are baptized 2. Believe that Christ's Body and Blood are truly present in the bread and wine. And as far as Luther's view of the Eucharist he said, "I would rather drink blood with the pope, than wine with...

Question from a visitor (if I'm allowed to ask)

I some ways I would like blame pastors for having bad theology in this regard, but I honestly think that the variety of communion practices in the ELCA and ELCIC is out of ignorance of the particulars. Because the church has been so desperate for pastors in the last few decades, too many ne'er...

    Uncle CF Needs You!!

Perhaps I will consider it again in the 12 months then. I probably really don't have much time in my final year of school anyways.

    Uncle CF Needs You!!

License for ministry in what sense? Different denominations have different standards. I could have been a pastor in many evangelical churches years ago, for example. That would be appreciated. I don't have tons of time, especially going into my final year, but this is something I might...

    Uncle CF Needs You!!

I am not an ordained Lutheran Pastor yet... but in 9-12 months it should be so. Could you say more about what is involved? How much time must be devoted to CF?

    The Lectionary

I prefer preaching from the lectionary. Especially during the season which are story oriented. Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter. It helps to the congregation to live in the rhythm of the Church year. I also couldn't imagine having to come up with a different topic to preach on every...

Jesus V Martin Luther: Who Will You Follow?

This is an embarrassing video, for the sake of the sane Romans out there, I would hope that it is removed. Luther was a polemical individual and often used hyperbole to make his points. Besides, the quotations mentioned in this video were all taken out of context - completely out of context...

    Apostolic Succession

Lutheran pastors are referred to as Pastors or Reverends. While Luther didn't coin the term Priesthood of All Believers, it does express his articulation of the doctrine. Priest implies a mediator between God and an individual. Luther wanted none of that, which is why we are called pastors...

    What Makes Lutherans Lutheran?

As my confessions prof explain to us, living at the foot of the cross is to always be discovering and rediscovering the depth of our need of Christ. Instead of advancing ourselves towards salvation, we only live more deeply in beneath Christ's feet finding out just how much grace is undeserved...
