  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Do Anglicans tend more towards Calvinism or Arminianism?

Well the Council of Orange in the 5th century also formally denied it, in a way that seems remarkably similar to the later Calvinists. But I of course agree that, excluding such isolated (and late) examples, the tenor of the Early Church was what we today would call Arminian. In other words...

Do Anglicans tend more towards Calvinism or Arminianism?

The question of free will is antecedent to looking to Jesus. Can we choose to look to Jesus in the first place?

Do Anglicans tend more towards Calvinism or Arminianism?

What sources do you recommend for substantiating that view? I can't claim to be an expert on Calvinism, but I have read the Institutes, the Westminster Confession, several Puritan and modern Reformed works. Maybe they do base their view starting from soteriology, without realizing it, which is...

Do Anglicans tend more towards Calvinism or Arminianism?

I've seen this mentioned on several sites, and would love to have it fleshed out more, if you have some time. How do the Calvinists and Arminians base their theology on soteriology? What does that mean, specifically? From the way the two sides have always explained it to me, they based their...

Help! How do I take communion?

My sincerest wishes to you. You seem to be exactly the kind of person that we need in the Church, and I pray that you resolve these knotty questions.

Anglicans, do you see yourselves as more Protestant, or more Catholic?

This. I would add that 'Protestant' is a misleading word, because in popular use it's a relative concept that definitionally must rest on something else to 'protest against', while 'Catholic' is unfortunately taken as a universal concept, that is self-sustaining. To be 'Protestant' depends on...

How necessary is Apostolic Succession to you?

Not sure why people are getting aggressive here... Ok let me put it this way: the Anglican church believes in a scrupulously valid succession of bishops, and has never suffered a break or interference in that process. It's simply not possible to make that statement with such a categorical...

How necessary is Apostolic Succession to you?

Here: No Anglican formulary states the precise view of apostolic succession, and I'd argue that's in large part to escape all resemblance to Rome as much as possible, during the original era of the Reformation. The charges and accusations of "Popishness" and "Romanism" which radical...

How necessary is Apostolic Succession to you?

I agree that the issue is muddled by the presence of Rome on the world stage, people not wanting to resemble it in their beliefs and practices. I'd argue that underneath, the question of valid orders IS a question of apostolic succession put another way. Anglicans argue their orders are valid...

How necessary is Apostolic Succession to you?

Has it? How would you argue, then, that sacraments ever become valid? It's unfortunate that apostolic succession has been relegated to people with a romanizing perspective. Traditionally, classical Anglicans have had a very high view of the church and the bishop, and concomitantly, the...

"Holy Ghost" or "Holy Spirit": Which do you prefer?

I just have to say, this is an excellent post. I've enjoyed the etymological insights into the meaning of words, such as this and what you posted some time ago comparing presbyter and priest (showing how the latter is derived from the former). If ghost IS properly speaking the slightly...

    This will come ...

Nope, if "even before there is a word on my tongue, Behold, O LORD, You know it all", then it impossible for him to be surprised. When we say it's 'impossible' it is not because we "limit" God, as wayseer would have it, but because God knows too much, he already knows everything, that's why...

    This will come ...

Here is a helpful link: “Omniscient is a word that means “knowing everything.” Scripture declares that God’s eyes run everywhere (Job 24:23; Psalms 33:13-15, 139:13-16; Proverbs 15:3; Jeremiah 16:17; Hebrews 4:13). He searches all hearts and observes everyone’s ways (1 Samuel 16:7; 1 Kings...
