  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

    Name of this forum?

Absolutely, and one of the great benefits of being a Protestant. If you're a Christian, you're just as much a priest as the rest of us. (Of course, ministerial leadership is a different issue on which we probably don't all agree.)

The priesthood idea seems to capture things best. "A Kingdom of Priests" is both biblical and catchy.

    What makes someone a Baptist

It's based on biblical principles, particularly in the New Testament, but Baptists were among the first to articulate it. John Bunyan was the first to give it full doctrinal development. Some of the ideas involved are these: - God has never granted a civil governor authority or power over...

    Question for Baptists/Anabaptists

My short answer to the original post: As a choosing Person, Christ had the natural ability to sin (i.e., He made genuine choices and was able to turn the stones to bread if He chose to). However, because of His nature as God, he was morally unable to sin (i.e., Under no circumstances would...

from The Baptist Catechism 90. Q. What doth God require of us that we may escape his wrath and curse, due to us for sin? A. To escape the wrath and curse of God due to us for sin, God requireth of us faith in Jesus Christ, repentance unto life (Acts 20:21). 91. Q. What is faith in Jesus...

    What makes someone a Baptist

Baptists grew out of English Separatism. Historically, besides a commitment to orthodox Christianity, Baptists hold to a distinctive combination of four beliefs: 1. Biblical authority Baptists reject that church tradition is authoritative when it comes to faith and religious practice...

    The truth about scriptual Baptism

Again, I point to the NIDNTT's article on Baptism, which spends several pages on exactly this question. "The earliest references to proselyte baptism belong to the latter half of the 1t cent. A.D. While they indicate the probability of its being a pre-Christian institution, the uncertainty they...

    The truth about scriptual Baptism

Yes. The verbs used are all aorist passive, and John is specified as the agent. He was baptized by John (hyp' Ióannou). See Matt. 3:13-14, 16; Mark 1:9; Luke 3:21. It is not valid to rewrite the text based on our partial knowledge of Jewish customs of the time. Most of our sources for Jewish...

    which Bible to get

If you're looking for a literal translation from the best texts, the ASV and NASB are about as close as you can get in good English. The ESV and HSCB are easier to read and almost as accurate. I also recommend the NET Bible (at bible. org ). It's a looser, NIV-like style, but the abundant...

What are great books on baptist theology?

There are three recent Baptist systematic texts: Millard J. Erickson, Christian Theology: Overall conservative, with a tendency to look for middle ground on a lot of issues. Wayne Grudem, Systematic Theology: More conservative than Erickson, 5-point Calvinist and associated with Third...

    Baptism, what to wear???

I've usually seen blue robes in the US, and every pastor I've ever had has worn waders under the robe. I was baptized in white and wore a swimsuit underneath. The Baptist churches in the Ukraine use white robes made of a thick material that stays opaque when it gets wet. Over there, they...

    The truth about scriptual Baptism

It matters for the same reason it matters how we pray, how we treat other people, how we worship, and how we raise our children. It is a matter of obedience. God has told us how we are to act and what kind of worship He delights in. He doesn't like it when we change the rules (see Levitcus...

    The truth about scriptual Baptism

It's on my website (check my profile). The specific file is baptism.html . It contains answers to questions about the Baptist understanding of baptism, excerpts from major Baptist confessions, and a list of all the baptisms in the New Testament. On the translation of 1 Peter 3:21, the Greek...

    Where are the Baptists?

Baptists started out among English Separatists. They didn't make much headway into continental Europe because those countries were officially Catholic, Lutheran, and Reformed. The Church of England persecuted as well, for a time, but Baptists prospered there and in the American colonies. The...
