  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

    Am I less Orthodox

Christ is risen! I have been away from these Forums for several years now and decided to come back to my old stomping grounds when I saw this very interesting thread. As an Orthodox priest of the Church and university professor, allow me to weigh in here. Fasting is never imposed by the Church...

Question from a visitor, (hopeI'm allowed to ask)

Dear Bushmaster, Please forgive me for taking so long to answer your question. It has been a very busy week. Origenes Adamantios' heretical writings and Origen himself were originally condemned by the Church via local synods and then officially by the Fifth Ecumenical Synod in Constantinople...

Question from a visitor, (hopeI'm allowed to ask)

To my knowledge, participation in the Eucharist for Catholics does not mean that man experiences the divine essence, even though the essence-energies distinction is nonexistent in Western theology. The benefits of communion, different from the West's idea of "substance" and the East's concept of...

Question from a visitor, (hopeI'm allowed to ask)

Dear Elizabeth, Thanks for your questions. (1) Origen was not excommunicated solely for his belief in the restoration of all (apokatastasis ton panton), which diminishes the gift of free will by preempting its prominence by the "even greater love of God." Regarding this matter, Origen...

Question from a visitor, (hopeI'm allowed to ask)

Thus, terms like "transubstantiation" (metousiosis), of whichthe Greek derives directly from the Latin and was first used in the 13th century by the Latin-minded Easterners who wanted union with the West, cannot be used to "explain" the change that occurs mystically in the eucharistic gifts...

Question from a visitor, (hopeI'm allowed to ask)

Man's participation in the divine essence via Eucharistic reception is impossible, as the great Origen mistakenly believed, since Creator and creature are not (and can never be) the same in their existence. The former is unoriginate and eternal and gives being to the latter, not the other way...

    What book are you reading?

"Eastern Orthodox Christianity: A Western Perspective" By Daniel B. Clendenin. A very good book for someone who is looking to understand Orthodoxy from a western perspective. Some of you from Russia must know this author. He was teaching at the University of Moscow. God bless, +Chrysostomos
