  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

    Ask a Philosophical Calvinist Christian

I'm not sure how far I want to get into the topic of van Til's writings. I shall venture, though, to put forth this, which I find baffling. Van Til, Introduction to Systematic Theology, wrote: “In the first place, it is possible in this way to see that the knowledge of God and the...

    Ask a Philosophical Calvinist Christian

When I was a student, some of us went to visit him. I don't remember much of what he said, but I remember that he had a cat. An appropriate animal friend for a self-described "bookworm." His wife brought us tea and pastries. Some of the guys were asking him about various questions about...

If fifteen living people claimed to witness miracles by Allah, would you believe?

Yes, I saw that. And as I remember, people started raising problems about which other god! that's why I thought maybe comparing doctrines to doctrines would avoid some of the problems that seemed to come up in comparing god to god. But not a big deal. Cheers, p

    Ask a Philosophical Calvinist Christian

TOL, do you have views on the Transcendental Argument for God - how good an argument it is, whether it's properly a philosophical or a theological argument, and so on? I once had tea at Van Til's house. We were all quite in awe of him.

What Would Evidence for God's Existence Be Like?

Interesting thought experiment, and interesting question. I don't think the analogy is completely apt, because Shakespeare as author by definition cannot be a constituent of the world of the fiction. God, on the other hand, as He is represented in scripture, acts in human history. So God is a...

If fifteen living people claimed to witness miracles by Allah, would you believe?

Would it help to rephrase the question of the OP? Perhaps instead of asking, which god would you believe in, it could be rephrased, "Would you believe in the historical doctrines of Islam?" That way we avoid the problem of the referent of the word "god" in various languages.

Greek language - couple of simple questions

Hello again, Kylissa, I'm not ethnically Greek but I've learned a good deal and have a lot of Greek friends. As Annoula said, the pronunciation of Koine as practiced in Greece is the same as the pronunciation of "modern" Greek. You'll find that in universities and seminaries outside of Greece...

Being Greek Orthodox in a sometimes aggressive American/Protestant culture

When I was in college, one of the stalwarts in InterVarsity, an evangelical Protestant group, was Greek Orthodox. He would make contributions from St. John Chrysostom and other Fathers. One of the members of the group had converted from Orthodoxy to Protestantism. She said she was trying to...

    Hellfire in Eastern Orthodoxy

Georgios Scholarios, Byzantine philosopher churchman and first Patriarch of Constantinople (= Gennadius II) after the Turkish conquest, criticized Origen for saying that "hellfire would not last forever" (quoted by Henry Chadwick, Early Christian Thought and the Classical Tradition, 2nd ed. 95)...

Greek language - couple of simple questions

Γεια σου, Κύλισσα! Hello, Kylissa! The pronunciation of ancient Greek changed between classical Athenian times of the 5th and 4th centuries BCE and the end of antiquity, and today, Greek is pronounced differently from the...

    True knowledge?

Hello all, as a non-scientist, Greek and Latin text guy, I follow the above with great interest. Everett, let me know if this would derail the thread. Your question about true vs. false knowledge pertains to scientific theories, correct? If so, do you want to characterize scientific...

    Advice about radiation for cat

Thank you for your reply, Arithea. Maya is ten. I have decided (at least for now) to go with "monitoring." She will see her regular vet on Jan. 27, and he'll try to find whether there are any signs of further growths. We'll do once a month for a while. The radiation would have required Maya...
