  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

    Help with answering a question

Thank you for the welcome and willingness to answer my questions. The Pastor at the church I have been attending has been awesome answering my questions as well - and I will be starting the Formation of Faith (adult catechism) class in the fall. He has already given me the materials for the...

    Help with answering a question

I'm already starting to see the "shunning". That's too bad... What I am really liking about Lutheranism is the objectivity, the emphasis on fact not feeling, and the Word of God trumping human reason. I also know that I have a lot to learn - and am looking forward to every minute of it...

    Help with answering a question

Thanks all. Great advice. Good points with them not being great friends in the first place if they are offended by what church I go to or differences in doctrine. I really like, "God has led me to this church and the biblical emphasis in wonderful" approach. Thanks again.

    Help with answering a question

Hi all - I've been attending an LCMS church for the past month due to the biblical emphasis and reverance of the Divine Service. Raised Catholic, but most recently attended a non-denom. church where I still have friends. My issue is this - I am having a difficult time communicating to my...

    Substance, not just EXCITEMENT

Very refreshing post. I have been visiting an LCMS church for a few weeks now after having been raised Catholic and most recently attending a non-denom. church. I have experienced much of what you describe - particularly hearing half-truths from the pulpit. I am thoroughly enjoying learning...

    Back from visit to LCMS

Thanks all for the info. about the small catechism. And I think I will go back. I am in Salt Lake City and the LCMS congregations here are very small. ECLA has a much larger presence. But I am discovering that growth is much better measured in terms of individual development and not in the...

    Back from visit to LCMS

Hi again- Visited a Lutheran (LCMS) church this past Sunday. Being raised as a Roman Catholic, the service was very familiar. However, the emphasis on grace alone, faith alone, and the Bible alone is new - and very refreshing. Very traditional service, small congregation. With a great...

Visiting LCMS this weekend - question

Hi all - I will be visiting a LCMS church this Sunday for the 1st time. I was raised a Roman Catholic and have been attending a non-denom. church of late as the emphasis on grace by faith alone appeals to me. However, I miss the reverential quality of the Catholic church. So I've been guided...

Church related activity + alcohol use ??

So then what do you all think of alcohol use in the small group bible study setting in general? (Even without the KNOWN presence of those struggling with alcohol). Thanks...

Church related activity + alcohol use ??

Thanks all for your replies. I lean towards jsimms615 in thinking that alcohol doesn't really belong at church related activities at all. But especially in this case.
