  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

A Though on St Olga of Kwethluk

There is an active Antiochian Orthodox Church outside Anchorage Alaska. I don't think its origins are related to emigres or Russian mission activities. I think its origin is related to Campus Crusade Protestant Evangelicals in the lower 48 moving there and converting en masse to Orthodoxy...

    The Start of WWIII

It is somewhat easier to refer to prophesies, Persians, Israel etc and point to brewing conditions that could lead to WW111 than it is to look at scenarios which are more explosive but- uncomfortably for some- inconveniently involve alliances between the orthodox church and the aggressor. In...

    A new Cathedral ?

Yeh, probably the right word is basilica rather than cathedral because it is dedicated to a special purpose rather than the home of a diocese. Not sure. I am not that fluent in Catholic.

    A new Cathedral ?

I think the cathedral in Portugal arises out the alleged apparition of Mary wherein visionary "peasant" girls said that Mary called for prayers that Russia would "return to the unity of the Catholic Church" and that there should be a consecration to Russia and various rosary and prayer...

Might want to try out an Orthodox Church, once a month

80-100 million Catholics in the Philippines too. Same historical reason. Spanish colonialism.

Indications of a Club Here, or a Secret Society?

Indications of a Club Here, or a Secret Society?

You certainly came with a lot of "I". You could always consider leaving that at home and coming back.

In what cases can a traditional church be banned in democratic states? The Ukrainian Orthodox Church may be banned.

True but you asked "what it would take for them (Americans) to defend the UOC" and I am saying that the interest is extremely low and Ukraine will need to secure its own freedom as a country and sort that out and its interest in having religious freedom on its own. It is an opportunity for...

Everything cannot be just about the U.S, Nato, and Ukraine. Your European neighbors, Poland for example, need to put troops on the ground in Ukraine to help Ukraine- inside Ukraine. They know they are next in line if Ukraine falls and they do not need NATO approval and it does not commit NATO...

In what cases can a traditional church be banned in democratic states? The Ukrainian Orthodox Church may be banned.

Despite our many faults, one of the optimistic aspects of being American is a perennial belief that every country seeks to be a Jeffersonian type democracy if only they just got some help. It is also a belief that has gotten us a rather long history of disastrous wars where the country we are...

In what cases can a traditional church be banned in democratic states? The Ukrainian Orthodox Church may be banned.

Yes. and that kind of crazy valuing or non-valuing of lives is rampant in Russia. The body count from soldiers being sent into the meat grinder is very high. About a thousand Russians a day. Except they are mostly ethnic kids from Siberia and Dagestan. It's not like they are fully human...

In regard to being foreigners: Not really. Two thirds of the ethnic Japanese who were sent to the camps were American born citizens. Not foreigners by American standards, except amongst unhealthy people who have prejudice may see them as foreigners. I would be willing to trade some Americans...
