  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

    Crossing Yourself?

Up, Down! Left, Right! Yikes! I just wanted to know why and not get directions to the Movies! LOL Thank you everyone who responded, the answers are all good examples of what I needed to understand. I think I will try doing my cross the way you Orthodox do it.

    Is Glenn Beck Orthodox?

Could be that he is Born Again. Their service is the same no matter where you go, -Rock Bands playing Christian Rock music -People speaking in tongues -Laying of the Hands (Benny Hinn lol) -Talking about the Rapture and the State of Israel as necessary for the salvation of Christians...

    Saints part 2 :)

I like to believe we are not 'saints' specifically but saints in the making and only if we do what it is that our Lord Jesus Christ has mercifully explained to us through the Holy Bible. As for the hypthetical situation, I'll pass since I'm not a saint. :holy:

Do We Honour or Venerate Saints?

Good point. Thomas Aquinas is a very good example of someone who is called a 'saint' but the reality of his lifestyle and beliefs were very antithetical to Christianity.

Do We Honour or Venerate Saints?

I know this isn't addressed to me but I would like to comment on this since I have had a discussion about this with an Orthodox Priest. Job was favourable and God heard his prayers and would instruct others not 'worthy' to approach Job who would pray (intercede) for them. My question to the...

Do We Honour or Venerate Saints?

Good point about unspecific prayer. The problem is not specific prayers/requests, but the problem is assigning specifics to saints. I'm not talking about the individual praying specifically for a need, but the ideas applied to saints by the Church that identify each saint as being divinely...

    Crossing Yourself?

I was wondering if anybody here knows why the RCC and the EO Churchs do their crosses differently? As a member of the Lutheran community I know that some Lutherans cross themselves the way the RCC does, but I couldn't help but notice that the Orthodox do their cross differently. What is the...

Do We Honour or Venerate Saints?

Good point, I got carried away with the terminology. Sainthood veneration is viewed as 'Dogmatic' as according to Orthodoxy, the 'Church Triumphant' is in complete communion with Heaven and the Church on earth. To pray to saints is as if to be praying to Christ (is what was told to me). Praying...

    protestants at an Orthodox wedding

This is amusing because I know some Lutherans who 'scowl' when I make the sign of the cross and then I have to remind them that even Martin Luther in his small catechism recommended doing the cross on our persons in all our endeavours! lol I personally blame the puritans for this! :D

Do We Honour or Venerate Saints?

Exactly! For example, the Prophet Elisha who was laid to rest after his death had a dead Israelite thrown hastily onto his bones and was suddenly brought back to life! If you know anything about Elisha (the follower of Elijah), he was able to do this while living, and only because of GOD! and...

    Luther and Calvinism

On a personal note, yes, I have experienced a deeper and more profound understanding of my beliefs as I grew older and will probably do so hereafter if the good Lord allows me to live a long life. Perhaps our 'vague' answers may become much more precise if you give more detail to your...

Is there any Orthodox consensus on UFOs?

A friend of mine sent me a excerpt from one of your Orthodox Monastics named Seraphim Rose. It addresses this question about UFOs very well. I will try to locate it and post it for you Orthodox folks.

Do We Honour or Venerate Saints?

This is precisely the problem! Every Orthodox Christian tells me a 'cookie cutter' answer that has nothing to do with my concerns! Its very frustrating. On one hand it sounds like the RCC and on the other it is not 'officially' accorded by the Orthodox in a form of Dogma (at least the 'divine'...

    salvation of infants

This is interesting because I had this discussion between my Orthodox and RC friends at work and we all agreed that such unknowable cirumstances of the afterlife are ultimately left to God and not to our understanding and definitions. Why would God allow a newborn to die and then be punished...
