  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Do you agree with the traditional doctrine of original sin?

That's a thoughtful answer. I think that our animal instincts likely do play a big role in our propensity to sin.

Do you agree with the traditional doctrine of original sin?

Original Sin Do you agree with the traditional doctrine of original sin? I mean, specifically, do you agree that: 1. God holds all people guilty for Adam’s sin AND 2. We inherit a sin nature from Adam How could it be fair that Adam’s sin has such a big negative impact on us all? Was it...

Are the worms and fire used to torment living people? (Rethinking Mark 9:48)

I agree that the Devil and then all those who are not saved will be cast into the Lake of Fire. The Lake of Fire is where people who are not saved will die a second time after being resurrected and judged. I explain this in more detail in this 20-minute video:

Are the worms and fire used to torment living people? (Rethinking Mark 9:48)

Yes, one of the advantages of the annihilation view is that it allows many texts to be read more literally in contexts where a literal reading makes good sense. It also allows interpreting the second death more literally. It means, literally, dying a second time. For more detail on the second...

    The First Resurrection

There is no question at all whether or not an unsaved person can become saved. The answer is yes. It happens when they hear the Gospel and they believe it and trust in Jesus. Whether or not a truly saved person can become unsaved is a much more complex topic. Certainly, there are people who...

Are the worms and fire used to torment living people? (Rethinking Mark 9:48)

Neither the original Greek in Mark 9 nor the Hebrew in Isaiah 66 indicate that the worm NEVER dies. Rather, it says that the worm does "not die." Sometimes "not" may mean "never," but very often "not" does not mean "never." I give specific examples in the video of Bible verses that use the...

    The First Resurrection

Although the Bible does not use the term "unsaved," it does talk Jesus saving His people: CSB Matthew 1:21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to name Him Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins." CSB John 10:9 I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved and...

Are the worms and fire used to torment living people? (Rethinking Mark 9:48)

The verse does not actually say that the worms will NEVER die or that the fire will NEVER go out. I point this out in the video. The point is that the process of death and decay will be complete permanent.

Are the worms and fire used to torment living people? (Rethinking Mark 9:48)

You raise good issues and ask helpful questions. Thanks! If all that Jesus was pointing to was the post-mortem decay of the dead bodies, that would not seem to be worse than having your eye plucked out. If the contrast was "you can have your eye plucked out" -or- "after you die your body will...

Are the worms and fire used to torment living people? (Rethinking Mark 9:48)

Yes, I agree that "perish" in John 3:16 is "the antithesis to eternal life." That much is clear just from a plain reading of the verse in English. If we dig deeper, we can see that the Greek word translated "perish" is apollumi. That word, and a closely related noun (apolleia), are the most...

Are the worms and fire used to torment living people? (Rethinking Mark 9:48)

Those of us who are, by God's grace, saved in Christ will indeed be resurrected with incorruptible bodies. But nowhere does the Bible say that the lost will also be resurrected immortal. In fact, from Genesis to Revelation there is no statement that the unsaved will live forever or that all...

That's very encouraging to me. Thanks for taking time to share that comment.

Are the worms and fire used to torment living people? (Rethinking Mark 9:48)

Why do you think that hell (Gehenna) is spiritual and not physical? Do you believe in a future physical resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous? Will not all be resurrected with physical bodies? Why then do you think that hell is only spiritual?

Are the worms and fire used to torment living people? (Rethinking Mark 9:48)

I agree that Jesus does not want us to literally cut off our hand or foot or pluck out an eye. He is saying that we should take strong and drastic actions to get rid of sin in our lives and that we should get rid of things that cause us to stumble and sin.
