  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Why not having free will is better

My reading of the thread thus far leads me to the following thoughts, which I have the temerity to hope might contribute to the perennial debates here yet again considered. 1) What is meant by human "freedom" of the will? I can't remember the philosophical titles and distinctions (and I'm...

    Compression of Time?

Gerald Schroeder is an orthodox Jew who once taught physics at MIT. He maps and old earth, Big Bang scheme onto (using Nachmanides and I think Rashi) rabbinic readings of Genesis 1's estimated five-and-a half days until the creation of Adam partly via the General Theory of Relativity and the...

    Newish Christian. What now?

Chemical_Alien While I'm not sure why so many posters have emphasized English translation as a Bible study resource as opposed to other resources for Bible study, some of which I have mentioned, nonetheless I concur with much of hedrick's remarks on the topic, not least in view of the proverb...

    Newish Christian. What now?

While I agree a bias-less response on my part as for others is not entirely possible, I recommend the introductory Exegetical Fallacies by D.A. Carson. The title is a negative phrasing of "how to study the Bible" or the like. A chapter in that book reviews a number of wrong (and hence right)...

What does it mean John 12:40?

I'm not sure I understand the specifics of what you are aiming for or why your OP question stands in the Discipleship forum, but perhaps the following might help. You cite the LORD's words to Isaiah at the latter's call to be a prophet in ch. 6:9-10 which in turn is used in John 12:40...

How to know if I am doing something an idol?

Good question (though by "something an idol" I am taking you to mean "idolatry" or the like). On the one hand there are clear boundaries when for example one starts praying to a god other than the One in the Nicene Creed (e.g., Krishna). I would call that idolatry, one that touches on basic...

Do you believe God does NOT love everyone?

If you wish to understand my position, at this point I suggest reviewing my previous posts. I don't know where the misunderstanding lies, though it does seem that there is one.

Do you believe God does NOT love everyone?

I agree per the previous with the above, and also think my post to which the above responds holds.

Do you believe God does NOT love everyone?

I would say the above misrepresents what I have written and what my position is because incomplete. I do not believe God loves everyone in the sense of final mercy; I do not believe God loves everyone as concerns salvation in Christ. God hardens some, etc.

Do you believe God does NOT love everyone?

I think we are close to understanding one another. It may help in addressing your questions to me to add the following illustrations of "agape-love" as the Greek OT and NT use the word often transliterated as "agape" in noun or verb form: 1) Amnon's incestuous rape of Tamar is described in...

Do you believe God does NOT love everyone?

Of those such as myself whom to appearance per context you are polling (I reserve the right to define what I mean for response purposes elsewhere if necessary), I would be surprised to find any who would confess "God is usually good but still does immoral & unrighteous things once in a while,"...

Is there a possible world where Adam/Eve do not eat of the tree?

Thank you for further explaining your position. Also note: 1) The claim that Adam and Eve both "possessed the Spirit of God" is of course neither stated nor implied anywhere in Scripture; it is a reasonable theological inference, but as such a limited foundation for drawing conclusions from it...
