  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

    Tribute to the Queen

I was lucky enough to be able to see a little part of her sad, final journey from Balmoral, and it was very emotional. Of course when a monarch is in their mid 90s preparations for managing their passing begin in earnest. What I didn't anticipate was how kind people would be to each other in...

    On the Morality of Abortion

I'm sure there are lots and lots of people out there working very hard on changing themselves, and no doubt were in Tolstoy's day too! I was once asked, by a hospital consultant, (during a college placement) to counsel a pregnant Christian who was in the middle of her university studies. She'd...

    On the Morality of Abortion

I had a pregnancy scare years ago (either the pregnancy was a false alarm, or I had a very early miscarriage...but at the time I assumed it was a false alarm). I remember sitting up all night searching the internet for answers. Not from a theological perspective (although there was a bombardment...

Methodist Church’s First Drag Queen Pastor: ‘God Is Nothing’

On a similar note, there's been some coverage of an episode in the NYC Grace Church where schoolchildren (from a school attached to the Church) were subjected to the sight of a scantily clad drag queen parading up the aisle...and encouraged to applaud as though they were at a rock concert. It's...

JK Rowling uncovers a key point in the transgender ideology debate that many are overlooking

I use public facilities as little as I can get away with. If we're getting to a point where large burly men self identifying as women get to walk into women only facilities and intimidate others with their presence, I'll try to stop using them altogether. I support efforts in the UK to stop...

A Christian Response to Pride Month

Mainly I just ignore any chatter about "Pride month" from people I know. I don't validate friends' expressions of support for it - I just stay out of those discussions on Facebook. I have a few friends who are gay, and I don't see any of them posting on Facebook about Pride month. They're not...

What Catholics Can Take Away From the Johnny Depp/Amber Heard Trial

He's a drug addict who leaves drugs sitting about for his pets to eat, hangs out with Marilyn Manson, hooks up with women decades younger than himself and has a well documented enjoyment of scatological humour. In all the circumstances there have probably been quite a few unpleasant items left...

What Catholics Can Take Away From the Johnny Depp/Amber Heard Trial

I'm embarrassed to admit I followed some of it and was interested enough to try to participate in a few discussions about it. Generally I found people weren't interested at all, or they were so obsessive that if you ventured any kind of opinion they'd berate you for not having watched the trial...

    Book Bannings

Agreed. Almost 40 years I attended a private school with a very moderate Christian leaning (though there were some pupils from other faiths, who the school seemed to accommodate quite easily). I not only recall being taught about slavery, but getting a homework assignment that required us to...

    The Johnny Depp situation...

They're both actors, with PR teams who are going to be advising them every step of the way. Apparently Johnny Depp's team wanted this televised, Amber Heard's team didn't. He's a far bigger star, who's got a fanbase which has been loyal to him for decades. In terms of who has the advantage in...

    The Johnny Depp situation...

The media & social media coverage of this case really encapsulates for me why the commandment against worshipping false idols continues to be on point to this day. The discussion is carried on a wave of celebrity fandom, most of which is for Johnny Depp. And the resulting discourse is...

Can Freedom of Speech be Bad?

As a newcomer to the site, I agree. I spent a bit of time looking through the site guidance on first joining, and it seems that a fair bit of thought has been put into promoting free but respectful speech. A site I used to post on became restrictive to the point where in a very short time it...
