  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

A Few Questions For The Calvinist To Ponder

Oh ... since you put it that way... Sounds like a very loving endeavor indeed. In my few short days here I've come to realize that all boards are the same - low on friendly, respectful discussion and high on attacking the perceived infidel. So you're SDA? You of all people should know better...

A Few Questions For The Calvinist To Ponder

Well then... since some of you have us Calvinists all figured out, then what is the purpose of starting another long drawn out thread that basically resembles a dog chasing his own tail?

    A Failed Prophecy?

The Greek word "onoma" (name) is used literally of proper names and figuratively of title, authority, attributes, or character traits - as is the Hebrew word "shem" (name). Matthew's use of Immanuel is akin to those designations ascribed to the messiah in Isaiah 9:6. Isa 9:6 For to us a child...

    Yes, I agree.

"I WILL BE WHAT I WILL BE"

No, the idea is not platonic. It's Biblical. If we try to hold the "openess" view of those passages that appear to say God changes, then we have a blatant contradiction in the scriptures regarding God - not to mention the impossibility of many of God's self declared attributes, such as...

The Bible Alone? Sola Scriptura Discussion

The answer is clearly no, not necessarily. Think about the OT canon and the Jewish leaders who put it together. Now ask yourself, If "yes" is the answer to my question, then how in the world did the Jews, as a whole, end up rejecting Christ and just about everything He taught?

"I WILL BE WHAT I WILL BE"

For those who wish to hold to the future tense translation of the Hebrew text in question, there is a problem that remains unaddressed. What would you all like to do with the fact that the present tense translation found in the Septuagint clearly demonstrates how the Jews understood the the...

Where is that in the Bible? - Call no man father

Wow! this thread is fast. The passage offered in the OP has to do less with literal "titles" and more about the attitude that can come with the title. In other words, Christ was saying that if you want to great then be a "servant" and not a "guru" high atop a pedestal. Please everyone, reread...

Where is that in the Bible? - Call no man father

What Christ was saying to all of those power hungry people can be summed up in one sentence. If you want to be great in the kingdom of God, be a servant, not a "guru." The titles really aren't the point. It's the attitude that sometimes goes along with them.

The Bible Alone? Sola Scriptura Discussion

Me too. But no, I've taken nothing out of context. My very simple point was that the Berean Jews were called "noble" for searching the scriptures for themselves, instead of being admonished for not referring to the "religious establishment" of the day. The subject matter of the "word they...

The Bible Alone? Sola Scriptura Discussion

Those who believe that the Church as an institution has been given the final word on interpretation have this against them: Act 17:11 Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were...

"I WILL BE WHAT I WILL BE"

There are a few things against the translation "I will be what I will be." One was already mentioned by "justified" - John 8:58. Also, the Jews who translated the Hebrew into the Septuagint used the same Greek phrase found in John 8:58, which is "ego eimi" ("I am"). "Eimi" (am) is the present...

    Saturday or Sunday?

I'd like to second that. Your scripture references are important to keep in mind when considering this issue. Speaking of the Gentiles: Act 15:5 But some of the sect of the Pharisees who had believed stood up, saying, "It is necessary to circumcise them and to direct them to observe the Law...

The Bible Alone? Sola Scriptura Discussion

While the early church didn't exactly formulate a "docrtrine," they certainly recognized that as they moved further and further away from the time of the Apostles, that a dual-source theory of authority was untenable. The beginning of Sola Scriptura can be plainly seen in the following quotes...
