  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What should the church's response be toward casinos/gambling?

That's fine =) And you're certainly entitled to your opinion. The original poster asked what the church's response should be. I simply informed that person as to what the United Methodist Church's response is. And it is quite clear. There was little to no editorial in my response; I was...

What should the church's response be toward casinos/gambling?

In this case, you don't have to ask what stance the church *should* have, as it already has one: The Social Principles of the United Methodst Church state that, "Gambling is a menace to society, deadly to the best interests of moral, social, ecnomic, and spiritual life, and destructive of good...

    TULIP and the Methodist church

Wesleyans are essentially 0 point Calvinists =) Wesley wasn't very fond of Calvin's theology. Wesley believed in only "partial depravity." Because of prevenient grace (the grace God pours on all of humanity, the grace that allows us to discover a relationship with God), we are capable of...

    Trekkie Trivia (5)

You're right, she did do an episode or two of Boston Legal, I'd forgotten that... but long before that, she was on T.J. Hooker =)

    Trekkie Trivia (5)

Alyssa Ogawa, engaged to Lt. Powell (Andrew, I believe), and her name is Patti Yasutake... For a bonus point (actually, I hope it's ok if I ask a followup question, I'm not sure of the rules here = ) ) name the episode in which she acted along side William Shatner =)

    Methodist Hurts and Questions

In case you were responding to my post, let me clarify -- I said "an appointed pastor." Unless your husband was a certified, licensed, appointed candidate for ordination in the United Methodist Church, he wasn’t officially appointed, which means the SPRC does have the authority to terminate his...

    Methodist Hurts and Questions

Actually, an appointed pastor (senior, associate, or otherwise) cannot be "voted out" by the PPRC. The cabinet makes the appointments, and the PPRC has no authority to refuse an appointment. Ultimately, it's a little more complex than that, of course, but I think it's an important distinction...

Did Wesley change his idea of salvation?

He was referring to those who had never heard (or understood) the Christian message. Other than that, you have your facts straight. Wesley did account for the possibility that salvation could come without Christ -- but not to one who *rejected* Christ. For more information, see Wesley's sermon...

    Wesley and Music

Yes, I'd say it would be fair to say that Clarke is a reliable source of Wesley's thought. At least, much more so than any of us seeking to refute that reliability today.

    Wesley and Music

In the early 19th century Adam Clarke wrote the Commentary on the Holy Scriptures. The Commentary was a Methodist exposition of the scriptures, something akin to Matthew Henry's Commentary. It was a far greater and more complete work than Wesely's "Notes on the Old and New Testaments." In...

    Wesley and Music

I think that's a great way to think about it today, but I disagree that that's what Wesley meant. I think he meant exactly what the quote says. Of course, he wasn't suggesting that we shouldn't use music. The Wesley hymns (most of which were written as poems and then put to music, of course)...

What makes a Methodist a Methodist?

As you sort through this, keep in mind that the doctrine of predestination is that God has chosen certain people to go to heaven. If God has not chosen you to go to heaven, under this doctrine, then you will not, no matter WHAT you do. There is also a doctrine of "double predestination"...

    Wesleyan Assurance of Salvation

That's an awesome story. I've been reading some 19th century accounts from various people in the Methodist church who were having similar experiences. All very moving, as is your story. And the next time someone asks you when you were saved, tell them "about 2000 years ago." Blessings...

What makes a Methodist a Methodist?

Thanks for expanding the scope, Artos. I should have clarified that the doctrinal and historical points I raised apply to Methodism in general, while the short bit of polity I discussed was in reference to UMC, specifically. For clarification, I didn't say that (only) prevenient grace was a...
