  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

    Physical violence among youth

Just quoting a few sentences. You got it. Part of the honor code was one on one, not two on one, picking on someone your own size/age/grade not someone smaller/younger. Didn't always happen, there were groups of kids beating one up; it happened but it was seen as a cowardly act. Also it was...

But just how "scientific" is this manual? How "scientific" is psychology? Who gets to define what is normal and what is not?

"Teacher sacked for giving out a Bible"

But just how neutral on the subject of religion? (As differentiated from say the areas of politics or certain publications?) The First Amendment refers to religion, speech and the press. Does a teacher saying he likes Shakespeare more than James Joyce promote one publication over another? I...

Not flipping over the chess board, just saying that the DSM is not an unquestionably perfect authority.

"Teacher sacked for giving out a Bible"

Bad analogy. If he had used slurs against a certain religion and blamed all of society's problems on a certain religion, it would be a different matter, but he wasn't doing that. Again, I see this as a simple conversation and an offer of a Bible. If the subject matter had been anything else...

"Teacher sacked for giving out a Bible"

That is not the law at all. To quote the First Amendment: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the...

"Indoctrinate?" This conversation occurred outside of class in the lunch line. BTW, "People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones" is from Shakespeare. Don't know whether he used the Danish proverb or the Danes used his. But did you just indoctrinate me into becoming Danish by...

No. He was free to accept it or not, just like when a book, flyer, food item, or anything else is offered.

"Teacher sacked for giving out a Bible"

According to the news report, (and assuming it is correct, since news reports often aren't) the facts are: The student was standing last in line. The teacher commented "The first shall be last and the last shall be first." The student asked where the quote was from. The teacher said it was from...

    Holocaust Remembrance Day

Not to take away from the suffering and injustice imposed upon the Jews, but at least half of those in camps were non-Jews, including Catholics, Evangelicals, and pretty much every segment of humanity you can think of. Not clear whether the motivation was really "hatred" of the Jews or the...

"Teacher sacked for giving out a Bible"

Substitute teacher in New Jersey was fired for speaking about Christianity with a student and giving him a Bible. (Guess he should have given him a condom, and he would have gotten a raise!) (I'm unable to submit a link since I don't have enough posts; would appreciate it of someone would Google...

Excellent point. I would say that much, possibly most of what society considers appropriate interests and behavior for men and women is arbitrary and not based on any logic.

President Hugo Chavez dies of cancer

"Nationalize" sounds a lot nicer than "seize" or "steal" doesn`t it? The reason a company foreign or domestic invests money and technology is to make money that compensates it for the costs as well as the risk of not finding oil in most of the wells drilled, or bad weather ruining the crop in...

Thanks for the thoughtful comments on a topic that causes strong emotions, especially on those who have personal experience with this. @football5680: Agreed, and I strongly suspect that the child's mother may have strongly wanted a girl. dgirl1986: It takes time for people to figure out who...

12 year old bullied/beaten boy dies

You're both pointing out how the world has changed (for the worse) since I was a kid. Teachers back then did have authority and although there were some bad apples (authoritarians full of themselves) generally kids respected the rules and all a teacher really needed to do was threaten to tell...
