  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

    I am ashamed...

Be not ashamed! It sounds like you've learned a lot about yourself. Maybe it would have been better if you knew ahead of time where you needed to be, but obviously you didn't, so don't sweat it. Tons of people do the same. It took me three semesters of engineering classes to figure out I was...

[College] How well do you and your roommate(s) get along?

My freshman roommate and I barely talked to each other, and I think we saw ourselves as very different people. If I could do freshman year over, one of the things I would change is that I would make more of an effort to talk to him. I don't know how well he would have responded, but I could have...

    Do you ever miss it?

I totally agree. College feels like home more than home does. Maybe because it's the first time I've been on my own as an adult, and I changed a lot there, so it's I'm used to being different there than I am at home.

    Brainwashed?

You may choose to use a word other than "brainwashed" but the fact is that we middle class white Americans have indeed grown up in a culture that has many misplaced values, making it really easy to believe those values are right. Jonesie, you say that "God doesn't necessarily call us into...

    Ok, question time.

Yes. I've sort of been there. My home is not very religious, but in college I met some Christians and, for lack of a better phrase, found God. I want to say to you, stop feeling guilty. How you feel is not what makes you who you are or your faith what it is. But I know what you are struggling...

Matlab: Yeah, it will probably be easy for you. I was just expressing my distaste for the language. ;)

    Textbooks?

Most of my textbooks are large hardcover science books, so those are all significantly cheaper on amazon (by about half). However, for small books for humanities courses, the price isn't very different for the bookstore. Last semester I bought some international edition paperback books online (I...

How do you balance evolution and creation?

Here's my take: I'm going to take "Evolution" as being the whole story that science has come up with, starting trillions of years ago with the big bang, and including the formation of the earth and the evolution of life on earth. It doesn't matter whether you believe this story or not, but know...

    Fall 2008 classes

-Classical Mechanics -Thermodynamics -Uncertainty, Nihilism, and Modernity -Chemistry (with lab) I don't think I will like chemistry, but I have to take a lab science outside of my major. Other than that I am excited. Oh, and Matlab sucks. It's really bad, and if you don't already know...
