  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

    [open]For all our Non-Christian Friends

I can't answer any of your questions because I'm not sure any of them have answers, at least none that wouldn't be the product of cognitive disonance. It does seem to me, however, that you have so many objections to Christian doctrine that it's almost hard to believe you were ever Christian...

    Why should I keep looking?

Pawnraider, if you went to "church" with me we'd meet at a house, not a formal building. You'd have dinner with us, wine, and pleasant conversation. We'd get to know you and what it is you believed. We'd respect your beliefs regardless of what they were, and if they were compatible with our...

Rules to being liked in the Church Game...

I note some comments such as "church isn't a social club," or "church isn't a game." Well, obviously not, but why shouldn't the level of fellowship be a consideration in deciding what church to join? I mean you're there, in Jesus' house, (an amiable fellow celebrating his love for you. Why...

    There's something about Mary.......

There's something about Mary that I'd like to know. Many of you may find this question naive, but to me it's critical: Did Mary have a choice?

How do you know when God's warning you against something?

And you think your husband is the one who's too excited to think rationally? You don't need spiritual advice, you need a manual on simple automobile maintenance.

Hah! I tested out as Orthodox first, then Catholic......and I'm a full-blown pagan!

"Pasators Debate Value of Lenten Sacrifice"

I just don't get this whole Lent fasting thing. How does giving up something you enjoy bring you closer to God? It would seem to me that, if anything, it would lead you to be resentful of God. Why can't you enjoy a nice, thick steak, wash it down with a beer, belch, light up a smoke, and be...

Who's going to be looking after your pet in the rapture?

This is pure genious. I wish I'd thought of it. The atheist challenge seems a bit over the top, though. All you'd have to say is that your representatives are Catholics.

God's word or the Comforter, whose teaching you?

But you can use scripture to justify anything. Isn't that the point of Jesus' little tete-a-tete with the Devil in the Jordan wilderness? I could use scripture to justify everything from polygamy to murder, that don't make it right. So where do you draw the line? Besides, the scriptures are...

Make that $6400 a month (badmath), still a lot of money.

    Tithing and budgeted giving.

What if people gave 10% of their time rather than 10 % of their income? That's roughly 16 hours a week dedicated to volunteer service. Let's say you make $10 an hour. That's worth about $160 a week, given directly to God's children. You would have to make $7200 a month to reach the monetary...

    Conversion Stories

I asked about compromise because you said you came from a Jewish background. While you say you never practiced your faith, I assumed there must have been a certain amount of cultural baggage that comes with being a Jew, even a non-observant one, that would run contrary to the Catholic tradition...

    Tithing and budgeted giving.

Give what you can afford to give. If you are in debt then you cannot afford to give. Pay your debts, get square, then give generously to those who are in need. Keep track of your giving, then declare it on your taxes; no sense paying for something twice. Don't worry about what the Divine...

    Conversion Stories

How so? Are you saying that your independently derived system of beliefs exactly corresponded to existing Catholicism? Excuse me if I find that hard to believe. You mean you made no compromises? Catholicism is a hard mistress. It's inconcievable to me that someone could just accept every...
