It's been a while since I have done research, but I found the rootsweb mailing lists to be the most effective and they are free. I meet other people related to me and they send me tons of info and photos and whatnot.

I'm not sure how much Irish I have in me, but I think it's a significant amount. One great-grandfather came to America when he was 16 from Ireland and my maiden name is from the Scott/Irish border. There may be other lines, of course.
