  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Christianity Makes You More Likely to be a Victim of Unpleasant and Harmful Behavior?

Sorry for taking so long to reply to what is quite a lengthy post and deserved of a response. The thing is that, I find it difficult to follow your sentences. However, forcing myself to do so is of value. I was going to private message you but there didn't seem to be the feature on this forum...

Christianity Makes You More Likely to be a Victim of Unpleasant and Harmful Behavior?

I appreciate the idea of leaving our fate in God's hands, as expressed above - this idea that God ultimately oversees our safety. Unfortunetely, however, the opposite contradictory idea is also expressed in Christianity, and that is free will and not relying or blaming God for how things turn...

Christianity Makes You More Likely to be a Victim of Unpleasant and Harmful Behavior?

Ok, thanks. I hope so. Through this dialogue, I have realised that some of my perspective on Christian meekness comes from the missionary work of Gladys Aylward. I am British and I don't know how famous she was outside of Britian, but her story significantly featured in my life as a young...

Christianity Makes You More Likely to be a Victim of Unpleasant and Harmful Behavior?

I like the analogy, thanks. However, I guess there’s always two sides to every coin. If someone waves some moldy-looking, bad-smelling cheese in front of your face and says ‘Taste it’, it only takes you 2 seconds to test your perception and you then discover it’s actually a delicious French...

Christianity Makes You More Likely to be a Victim of Unpleasant and Harmful Behavior?

That's the problem, the ultimate sacrifice that lies at the heart of Christianity will inevitably compel its followers in that direction – the direction of victimhood. Sorry, but I don’t want to be a victim. Such an ethos is a bad recipe to live by. I’m not saying God wants us to be victims -...

Christianity Makes You More Likely to be a Victim of Unpleasant and Harmful Behavior?

Throughout my life I always unfortunately walk just along the very line at where Christianity begins and no further. This could be because of fundamental concepts that I struggle with. One concerns unrealistic expectations: the idea that you are always sinning even when the bar is practically...

    God and Humour

I previously asked members here if they think that God has *reasonable expectations for us: like say he might expect a chronic alcoholic to have the conviction to walk a different route home so as to avoid the temptation of his local bar, but wouldn’t expect the same alcoholic to resist a shot...

    Approaches to Sin

Nice, I like the bridge analogy, thanks I believe I get what you're saying. Lots of what we do or don't do constitutes sin, much of which can be more harmful than perhaps first appears. But again I think you might be missing my point. My point isn't really about the various forms of harm...

    Approaches to Sin

Paleouss, in a way yes and in a way no. This is not about an alcoholic convincing himself it will be just one drink and then he finds himself down the same drunken and destitute path. Even though there is truth in what you say and applies to many addictions, we do not all have the same mental...

    Approaches to Sin

Thanks ViaCrusis. In one sense what you write is rich with conceptual depth; in another sense it's simply a struggle to square a circle: God will take into consideration all varieties and yet expects the exact same from us and treats all sin as the same. This is actually a contradiction. If...

    Approaches to Sin

Hi jacks. You said: ...I believe they are all basically the same... Does that mean you believe all sin and attempts at combatting sin are the same? A man who averts his eyes from his neighbour's car so as to reduce the frequency and intensity of envy that he feels compared with a man who...

    Approaches to Sin

What a nice greeting, thank you. It wasn't that blessed as I was fired this week but thanks anyway. Well, as illustrated by the examples, I meant more about questions on what constitutes sin. In a later post I formed some more direct questions concerning the examples.

    Approaches to Sin

Thanks, I can agree with that. Like Paleouss did, if you map your thoughts on to my very examples, things would be clearer to me. It seems like you're simply saying 'be like Jesus'. However, unlike Jesus we are miles from perfect and never will be. Surely God's expectations and forgiveness is...

    Approaches to Sin

Hi ViaCrucis. I think you talk of 'want' in an oversimplified way. No one wants something 100% that they can also have but then not take it. We desire only aspects and parts of things, we fantasise, etc. If a woman sexually fantasises that she is being raped it doesn't mean she 'wants' to be...
