  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

    Obscure & Useless

9.999... = 1 is one of those results in mathematics that isn't intuitive but that we have to put up with because otherwise very useful and basic assumptions have to be discarded. There are other examples. The Banach-Tarski paradox (which isn't obscure from the perspective of a mathematician)...

    God Salts Reality With Miracles

That's twice I've noticed you making a sweeping , generalized, and vague statement. Since you never responded to my last reply to one of those, I won't bother going into detail with this one. As I'm sure somebody will explain, your post is wrong. I can't find a single sentence in it that's...

    Schrödinger's Evolution

I read that thread. It was answered well. In general, (that is, every example I can remember), the pattern is that you posit a question in an OP, someone answers it, and then you eventually say that no one answered it.

Scientific American: "Ok, We Give Up..."

Thanks! I'll be picking up both when I have the chance.

Scientific American: "Ok, We Give Up..."

Luckily, I work every day with practitioners of an altruistic moral philosophy they call Chrisitanity. Whether or not its what you refer to I don't know, but it's pretty sweet. Do you have any references/sites/books/sources that would help me see Christianity from your perspective? I must say...

    Explain the Big Bang

No, the Invisible Pink Unicorn. No, Jesus. No, it was Vishnu. No, wait, it was Kali. The Flying Spaghetti monster. In the beginning was only Muspelheim and Niflheim. No, in the beginning it was chaos and then gaia came out of the chaos and created Uranus the sky. With all these explanations...

    Mathematical Precision of the Bible

Sometimes people quote those they disagree with to refute them. I am suggesting you have not provided the context needed for me to evaluate Talk Origins' use of the statement. In fact, not all atheists are perfectly alike or believe the exact same things. For example, my friends and I disagree...

so what place do giants take in evolution

even if it is, there are people who seriously have this little critical thinking ability. I've met them, live and in the flesh. sorry about your hope for humanity ^_^

Scientific American: "Ok, We Give Up..."

I don't know who you refer to, but in fact, there were some people here (mostly not in this subforum) did drive me towards Christianity. They presented a version of Christianity that appealed to me fairly strongly. My leanings towards Christianity were partially logical and partially...

Scientific American: "Ok, We Give Up..."

we'd say you were a bad one and that you hint at being persecuted quite often, when really you could remove a lot of criticism from your life quite easily by just not reading the forum. If that's not an option, then you've got two choices - learn how to reason or deal with it. But, while...

    Mathematical Precision of the Bible

First, this is Talk Origins quoting karl popper, and without a link I can't verify if its talk origins' actual views. Second, this is not the statement you made. A close reading will, in fact, suggest that Popper may have believed that mathematics is not the best kind of evidence. From this...

    Mathematical Precision of the Bible

Who is "they"? before I get to the fact that I disagree with "they" for multiple reasons, who is "they"?

    "I'm not an expert, BUT......."

And for every example of evidence based medicine hurting people you provide I could probably provide ten examples of it directly saving someone's life , and if you allowed a little statistical reasoning many many more (I'm talking about vaccines), and if you allowed just helping people even...

Would someone with a college education explain this, please?

That's not explaining the miracle. That's explaining how the miracle could not have actually happened. It's usually related to the so-called miracle being proposed as something that should be taught, as fact, to our children, which is where most of us (non-literalists) start to care. I only...

What he said. Maybe not for the same reasons, but the words fit.
