  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I think your estimated percentages for both science and reason (I see little difference between those two anyway) are way off, and what in the world is "general experience" and what makes it different to science/reason? You left off accidental discovery, which would be mathematically...

No, I am saying your definition for it which includes (emphasis added): is actually just consciousness.

I didn't say it was the objective primary or exclusive method. I said it was currently the most accurate method, and certainly more accurate (whether it can use itself to validate itself or not) than intuition (or "gut feel"). Want an example? Humanity's intuition used to be that the earth was...

How are traditional causes of belief reliable in acquiring knowledge?

You'd be better off praying for an answer from God. :prayer:

No, I'm down with the best method for determining truth from falsehood (in the real world). Hypotheticals aren't necessary for this argument. Is there a pyschological study which evidences that it is better for an individual to believe things that are false instead of things that are true...

Oh I see what you did there. Very clever. No it does not. It is a principle widely supported by scientists and atheists is all, and in my opinion, is currently the best methodology for determining truth somewhat objectively (as opposed to presupposing heresay or relying on individual mental...

Pretty much on the money. Sure, I wasn't accusing YOU of anything. It appears you aren't claiming to be able to demonstrate "reasonable" faith, so we have no further points of contention on this thread.

Don't know about debate, but I would be interested to hear your explanation for how you came to this conclusion.

We can discuss/debate the various definitions of faith and/or reason, but my intention in this OP was not to. Hence my attempts to clarify what I define them as (not objectively what they are). The point of the OP was to discuss whether it is consistent to argue that you are applying 'reason'...

Appreciate the honest response Resha. I was a bit naughty referring to blind faith, I should have said "belief without empirical evidence". I can't speak for all atheists, however I have honestly investigated all the world's current major religions and found them to be equally incredible...

No, it is not the scientist's obligation to falsify all competing theories which are put before him/her. However it wouldn't hurt. It is their professional obligation to honestly consider peer claims that his theory is false. That my friend is the scientific method.
