  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Living Too Far From A Parish!

A correction to an earlier post and another option if you are on the east end would be the Greek church: Assumption Church 930 Ormsby Lane Louisville, KY 40242 Rev. Fr. Eleftherios N. Legakis - Presiding Priest Phone: (502)425-7775...

    Jordanville Prayerbook and Chrysostom

When I asked my priest about this when I was an inquirer, he showed me how to make the sign of the cross. He also told me that there is a great diversity within the church on how and when people make the sign. He concluded by saying that there are no "cross police" who can tell you that you...

    07-07-07???

"They are gonna make a great protestant utopia!" The only way to do that would be to only have one member. Then they could all agree on something theological! ;) Forgive me, I couldn't resist.

    More (sincere) questions about Orthodoxy

I agree with others that reading "The Orthodox Church" will answer most of your questions. Meeting with a priest would be even better. If distance is an issue, you could contact one by phone or email. I am just a recent convert, laymen so nothing I say is "official". It is just what I...

    Wild fire - prayer please

This is a very large fire of approximately 52,000 acres. The latest reports say that 35 cabins and 40 out-buildings have burned. Many, if not all, of the cabins are seasonal/recreational cabins and not residences. The fire has been burning towards the north which is away from Ninilchik and...

So is this the general consensus?

Yes, many Orthodox hold the view that the Bishop of Rome began the process of what ultimately became Protestantism. Ignatios

    Question about Eastern Orthodox

The Encyclopedia Britannica Macropedia has excellent articles on Christianity and Eastern Orthodoxy that are written from a neutral position. Those articles will answer your questions much better than I could. They should be available from your local library. Ignatios

    And it begins

I've been through, and continue to have, these types of family issues. As you know, they can be very frustrating, stressful, and even depressing. I agree with the earlier post, don't try to convince anyone by persuasive arguments. It is rarely helpful or productive. I'll be praying for you...

Need help picking out a new Bible

I stopped using the NAS about ten years ago. However, either the Slimline or Thinline might meet your requirements. They have a concordance and cross references without the study notes. You might want to also pick up one of the more literal (word for word) translations to see the where the...

    Which Translation of the Bible?

For the Old Testament I use Brenton's version of the Septuagint with Apocrypha. It is nice because it has both the Greek and English. For more casual reading I have the Cambridge KJV w/Apocrypha. As others have said, there is no "official" English version. I do plan to pick up an Orthodox...

    Where would go?

    1. The Holy Land 2. Greece (especially Mt. Athos) 3. Russia (especially the far east) 4. The rest of Europe 5. New Zealand 6. Australia I'm actually considering a brief trip to the Russian Far East next year. I live in Alaska and I'd love to visit our closest Russian neighbors in Provideniya...

    I don't know about you...

I avoid ALL products from the People's Republic of China. I lived there for awhile and have many good friends there. Unfortunately, several of them have done time in "re-education camps" and prisons for things like illegally owning an English Bible. My best friend got two and a half years for...
