  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The Problem of Evil and Free Will

H'm and one said speak to us of love and the preacher opened his mouth and the word God fell out so they tried again speak to us of God then but the preacher was silent reaching his arms out but the little children the ones with big bellies and bow legs that were like a razor shell were too...

The Problem of Evil and Free Will

Again. How? God is His own Gift. How the the gift is given is unique to each. The "one way" is the gift itself, not a particular way.

The Problem of Evil and Free Will

How? Keeping it simple, as the mystics say ( from out of various Faiths ):- "God is His own gift". All else is works.

The Problem of Evil and Free Will

The Buddhists texts speak of the "Heartwood of the Dharma".....So this holy life.......does not have gain, honour, and renown for its benefit, or the attainment of virtue for its benefit, or the attainment of concentration for its benefit, or knowledge and vision for its benefit. But it is this...

The Problem of Evil and Free Will

Thomas Merton says that God IS freedom, which - at least for me - is a thought that has the potential to open any debate on "evil" ( and "overcoming" it ) beyond Theism. Here are Merton's thoughts on "The Gift of Freedom", from "New Seeds of Contemplation"........ The mere ability to choose...

The Problem of Evil and Free Will

This is the point I have sought to address (or at least, have a discussion about) on the "Scope of Effort and Grace" thread on the Christianity and World Religions Forum. I am actually taking time out at the moment. I have a lot on, and to be honest some of the views expressed here are, from a...

The Scope of Effort and Grace

HI again miknik, no, as was said, we leave our very own doings/efforts behind and surrender to Grace. We can remain blind to our own effort, "effort" in all its scope. Which is the subject of this thread. Anyway, I am enjoying the rest and will be back in October ( God willing as they say )...

The Scope of Effort and Grace

Sorry, your equation of your very own "doings" with the Narrow Way itself is evident. When we cease to make any such equation, THAT is when we leave our own efforts behind and actually surrender to Grace.

The Scope of Effort and Grace

Yes, I understand. One simply needs to see that the parameters set by ones own mindset need not be equated with true "honouring", and certainly does not exhaust such "honouring".

    Misconceptions

    1) That Buddhists seek to be "one with the all" 2) That the "Void" ( or "sunyata", or "emptiness ) can be virtually equated with nihilism/nothingness. 3. That it is a philosophy.

The Scope of Effort and Grace

Is it not wonderful how a "non-theistic" path can lead to communion with a "theistic" path? Is it not terrible when people speak of "one way"? Such communion leads to a deepening of trust and faith in the very nature of Reality-as-is. "One way" leads only to isolated "selves" each jabbering of...

The Scope of Effort and Grace

As I see it..... There is the self we think we are, and the self known only to God. There is the self think we are building, and the self known only to God. There is the self we judge others to be, and the self known only to God. Some appear to think that these are all identical. But God...

The Scope of Effort and Grace

Why I need a rest. The Grace of Amida is ONE, for all, without discrimination of race, colour or creed. There is no two tier system. Bible Christians are free to think themselves the "elect".
