  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

My sisters mental health issues seem to be getting worse and occurring with more frequency.

I think you will find in the end that all sin is rooted in disordered self-love. This could also be phrased, "... is rooted in an idolatry of self." True and eternal love is inseparable from authentic adoration of (and in) the One Triune God. The notion of maturity, and of sin being an...

My sisters mental health issues seem to be getting worse and occurring with more frequency.

And she may be suffering within her soul even more - many times more - than the suffering come upon those who love her. Jesus could see the beautiful man created by God, even in the costume and mask of the ugly and horrible face of the demon who had taken possession of him. We must remember...

My sisters mental health issues seem to be getting worse and occurring with more frequency.

Are those two disorders not related? I sense we will see both increasing as the last of the last days grow closer. But as to their relatedness: all that God created in the beginning was good, very good. Evil - and every kind of disorder, physical, mental, spiritual - began and spread from the...

Sense of community at local oarish

I am most interested in your last sentence, and would appreciate your expansion on it, if you're willing. Of the several kinds of parishes around, when it this test passed, and when is it failed, and when is it avoided? Of course some of us really have no viable choice in the matter - in which...

    Intercessory Prayer

My time is very limited just now, so please excuse my brevity. Michie's response in post 14 is good - from "AI"! - but it is true. The letter of James is worth listening to, very carefully, concerning the misguided confusion in many in the Church, on the matter of "prayer". A saint one said...

    I'm sorry - but I think I did.

    Intercessory Prayer

The point of prayer is that, it is the path of our vocation: we are made for holy fellowship with the Trinity. God created us to share in His Being, His Love, His Happiness. To share in His very Life, we must grow into the "image and likeness" of Him Himself. Thus, the "growing into" is a...

Would Jesus Condemn the Rosary? Jesus condemns ‘vain repetition’ in prayer . . . but Catholics also have the rosary.

I'm sorry to suggest that some Evangelical protestants do not have the total market on empty repetition in "praying." It began with Cain and Abel. Cain had perhaps noticed the way his brother Abel prayed..., or offered..., or worshipped.... His brother no doubt had within him a sense of...

Can these kinds of people be trusted?

"Maybe that's me"? It is good that that thought came to you, dear Lady. This whole thread was troubling to read, because a great opportunity for obedience to the Lord was missed, concerning forgiveness. That is so very important for us all, to be always forgiving toward others - even overt...

    Meditation

Hi JimR - our studies of the spiritual life have led to many different understandings. This is very sad and troubling to me, as I see so many missing so much that is crucial: There is only one Truth.

    Meditation

The path to holiness proceeds through stages. Christian meditation should rightfully begin in the first stage (called the Purgative Stage, or Stage of the Beginner) of this journey. What is formed in the soul by virtue of Christian (discursive) meditation establishes a crucial part of the...

    Meditation

Meditation has become a very confused word in the West, including Catholics. Eastern mediation frequently means "emptying the mind" - a very foolish thing to attempt, wise teachers would say. The evil one loves an empty mind to move into. In the Catholic Faith "meditation" traditionally means...

The Vatican opens a Muslim prayer room, Sparking debate (article link)

But dear sister Michie, everything that is, has to do with God. Anything that has nothing to do with God is the lie, having not even being. This seems to be an example: The setting up of merchandise in the Court of the Gentiles - which should have been a place of prayer for them - was severely...

The Vatican opens a Muslim prayer room, Sparking debate (article link)

There is an on-going tension in this world between Truth and falsity. The coming to Life, and Truth, in one “man born blind” is illustrated in John’s Gospel chapter 9, sometimes understood to be about “The Man Born Blind.” By God’s grace [Jn 9], this man was healed of his (physical) blindness...
