  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

    Explaining the God particle

Speculation -> hypothesis -> prediction Test the prediction against empirical evidence and see whether you get a consistent framework. Further test that framework in other areas/experiments and see if it comes back clean. All knowledge proceeds axiomatically. Any you possess is not...

    Explaining the God particle

The Omphalos hypothesis is uninteresting because it lacks explanatory value. I can posit that we're actually part of a complex computer simulation like in the Matrix. Either way it doesn't get you anywhere. Furthermore even if one were to present evidence that seems to indicate the hypothesis is...

"We oppose critical thinking" - Texan Republicans

Yeah I ain't buying that. I'm from the US and the way the other posters have interpreted the document seems spot on to me. This also isn't the first time Texas Republicans have done something nationally embarrassing and anti-intellectual. Remember when Republicans voted to rewrite school...

    Different state past

But Jesus himself never wrote anything down. The only reason you know anything about his life & teachings is because other people wrote these things down. This goes to a fundamental issue: why do you consider specific books canon and specific books heretical? Some Pauline epistles are almost...

    Different state past

Not a rebuttal. Not a lie. The Ebionites, one of the earliest Christian groups, considered Jesus the messiah but did not think he was divine. Early Christian history was not nearly as doctrinally "clean" as you think it was. The reality is that concepts like the virgin birth, the trinity, the...

    Different state past

But what you're essentially saying here then is that everyone who follows a god other than yours is deluded in some way. In fact the gods they follow may be "demons" who intentionally mislead people. Where do you get the authority to say that your god is the "true" god and all the others are...

Solid State Physics - Kittel 8th ed.

My condolences. I had to use Kittel for thermodynamics back in the day and I think it's fair to say he isn't the best educator. As for worse physics books... maybe Jackson? Depends how masochistic and mathematically oriented you are.

    Different state past

Vague prophecies that can fulfill whatever you want them too. A risen Christ you have no proof of other than personal experience (the same sort of proof you'd be over eager to deny Hindus who say they have felt the presence of the god Shiva). Denial. False prophecies. A person not considered...

    Different state past

Something for which you have no proof other than a strong inner conviction? Yeah that's real convincing. Older than the Bible in any case. :) Yet you fail to provide any. Give me a few reasons why the bible should be given this primacy and maybe I'll come around to your way of thinking...

    Different state past

Ah I see how it works. "We have the oldest record. What? You have a document that predates the Bible? Well then we have an even older imaginary non-physical record that I just made up." Be serious. For example, there are clay tablets with the myth which use the language of Old Akkadian with...

    Different state past

The legend of Etana, by ANY measure, predates the Bible by at least several hundred years (even given the incorrect view that the Exodus story transpired exactly as written and Moses authored the Pentateuch). Etana mentions gods, spirits, and supernatural occurrences. So why, if Etana is older...

    Different state past

So long as we're letting mythology count, then we should obviously take seriously the Greek's account of the Titanomachy. A literal war between gods. Or the Hopi belief that we exist in the 4th world, the first three already being destroyed by various means. It may be written down, but it...

    Different state past

i.e. A couple other ancient cultures mention a flood therefore the biblical account of a global flood has to be literally true the exact way I read it. Also an ancient Sumerian manuscript says kings had reigns lasting thousands of years. Totally squares with long biblical lifespans dawg...

    Different state past

Mac: So what about radiometric dating? 1a supernovae? The fact that we can see light coming from locations many millions of light years away? The fact that a different state past would cause everything we look at for evidence of the past to look incredibly different? Joe: Forget that! It's all...
