  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

    Why is the bible "finished"?

The Bible wasn't written as "the Bible." The books were written either as individual books or small groups of books. But nowhere was it consciously being created as "the Bible." What happened was that Judaism, and then Christianity, saw certain books to be foundational to their respective...

    Common English Bible?

I think it's moved beyond that now. Conservatives are increasingly aware of the tension now that Liberals have raised it -- but I can see that it would be empowering to show the actual source for the difference. Here's the rub: if Matthew misquotes Isaiah, then Matthew's authority is put into...

    Common English Bible?

I've been looking at these in the Comprehensive New Testament and I think they've found a solution to that dilemma: whenever the NT quotes the OT they just show if the quote is following the Masoretic, Septuagint, or a Dead Sea Scroll type text. The NT authors weren't misquoting the Masoretic...

    Common English Bible?

I think the question of the Common English Bible is one of whether it is a primary or a secondary translation. Everyone has their favorite, of course. But for most people there needs to be a balance of accuracy and readability. The NASB, for instance, deserves the same criticism Spurgeon gave...

    1 Jn 2:5

I was quite intrigued with their notes on propitiation, now that you've pointed it out. I had no idea of it's connection with the LXX term for the Mercy Seat on the ark of the covenant. There's also Comfort's Textual Commentary on the Greek New Testament. Comfort seems to be taking up where...

    1 Jn 2:5

Thanks Unix, I got the COM from Amazon today and I was stunned that I had never heard of it before. The book is a gold mine! I couldn't put it down for hours! In any case, I see your concerns here, but I'm not sure exactly how they could have done it any differently. I was afraid that...

    Why is the bible "finished"?

Although I am intrigued by the prospect of an algorithm to parse authorship in the New Testament (as it is being done for the Old), we have to remember that some of Paul's letters were explicitly written by a secretary. There is no way to separate the specific wording of the secretary from the...

    1 Jn 2:5

I looked up the COM on Amazon, but you have me concerned with the bias issue. Can you give me some examples? Thanks.
