  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

    Are soldiers evil?

Those were some of the tamer chants, unfortunately. We sort of took pleasure in coming up with the most perverse lyrics possible. The more shocking, the more brutal, the more outrageously violent, the better. Now I was just a private in one company of one regiment of one army, so I can't say...

    Are soldiers evil?

But are there really that many saints who were saints because they were soldiers? Saints are saints not because they were perfect on earth, but because they are perfect in heaven (as we see reflected in their miraculous intercessions here upon earth). That isn't to say that a Saint didn't have...

    Are soldiers evil?

One great problem is that though the Church teaches that sometimes Catholic cannot fight (in the case of unjust wars), the United States government does not recognize the right of selective conscientious objection - you are not allowed to pick and choose which wars that you are willing to fight...

So did you guys read the article?

    Are soldiers evil?

Are soldiers evil? I was once a soldier. I wrote this article to try and think it through. Was I evil? Are my friends evil? Is my brother? No. It doesn't seem right to use the word evil. I'm a pacifist, now. But I don't see how I can call soldiers evil. So how do I think about this...

GOP to John Kerry: Thank you!!

I do appreciate your honest and reasonable reply! I'll try to do the same. Yes, this would be the other side - Kerry's explanation. I agree with you, but I think for different reasons. I'm inclined to agree you you to a certain extent. By calling the president 'stuck' in Iraq, you...

So what's Satan up to these days?

Along with all the sexual immorality in America, don't forget the wealth, don't forget the violence. We are killing thousands upon thousands around the world in our wars - all to keep ourselves fat and fed. Babylon wasn't just a city. It was a nation. And just like the Romans, just like the...

    Where exactly is satan's domain??

Scripture seems to suggest that the Devil prowls the earth, like a lion - looking for people to devour. The book of revelation speaks of Satan being thrown into hell at Christ's return. If Satan is still the prince of this world, though he stands condemned by Christ's victory, we should...

GOP to John Kerry: Thank you!!

What I wrote is meant to apply to me, just as much to others (if not more so). They are strong words, but only because we're dealing with something much more important than some stupid Kerry comment. The whole discussion reveals something deeper about us - that our politics often conflicts...

GOP to John Kerry: Thank you!!

I am horrified by what I've seen in this thread. There needs to be a real intellectual and spiritual honesty in judging the words that came out of that man's mouth. But that takes the humility to admit, to truly admit to yourself, that you could be wrong. It's a terrible feeling, because...

GOP to John Kerry: Thank you!!

I'm sincerely flabergasted that anyone still thinks that Kerry said those words "stuck in Iraq" in reference to the soldiers in Iraq. Not even the Republican pundits are holding to that anymore. The talking points and spin have shifted, focusing less on the actual event and words of Kerry, and...

GOP to John Kerry: Thank you!!

It appears that you're hyped up on emotion, and that you haven't taken a critical look at what Kerry said or why he said it. Even republicans seem to be backing off the idea that Kerry was intending to insult the soldiers in Iraq. Check out http://www.nationalreview.com So look, these...

GOP to John Kerry: Thank you!!

I was fooled like all of you were. But now that it is clear that Kerry was insulting the president, and not the troops, don't you feel like you've been misled by the republicans? Let's be intellectually honest, here. If we were more concerned with the truth than we were over fighting petty...

Law Enforcement careers and being a good Catholic

Me too! This is the Church's teaching: The Church is calling all of us to take another look at war, to ask hard questions about war - especially in an age of WMDs and terrorism. It's our duty to take up that call. Some people have taken up that call and determined that the just-war...

Law Enforcement careers and being a good Catholic

You're pointing out that the Church does currently endorse the Just-War theory, as well as moderate forms of self-defense. However, just as the Swiss Guard are now mostly symbolic and decorative (though they do have a policing function as well), the just-war theories and all theories of...
