  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Derek Chauvin Sentenced to 22.5 Years for Murder of George Floyd

For what? 2nd degree murder? Guess he's lucky he didn't commit the offence in Pennsylvania, then.

    Once Gay (Matthew and friends)

Ms Heche alleges that she has had a very abusive childhood. Although some or all of what she alleges is contested by her family, we should cut her a lot of slack.

I don't understand why you are sometimes happy to accept confounders and sometimes not. Why do you persist in comparing Rhode Island with Texas, for example, when the environmental factors alone make it a bogus comparator?

It is a delicate subject, and I agree that it needs to be approached with sensitivity, and we need to avoid slippery slope arguments. Nevertheless, we have to make some assumptions - the standard economists' approach - about acceptable trade-offs. The same policy that you have been (correctly...

    Starting to doubt

Sheila, I don't think anyone is trying to embarrass you, sincerely. As others have said, you enter some data which publicly shows on your profile. My real name isn't Derek1234, though I am a Protestant (of sorts) and married, and do come from the UK. It's fine not to enter real information, but...

No, the riot at the Capitol on Jan. 6 wasn’t a ‘completely peaceful protest’

Yes. It's abundantly clear. And yet ... so deniable, to those who wish to.

Well, let's use this metric: How Government Agencies Determine The Dollar Value Of Human Life. So a human life is $10m, meaning the cost in the US has been USD 601,000*10,000,000. You may have a better answer. I sure hope it's not going to be that not all lives are worth the same, though...

No, the riot at the Capitol on Jan. 6 wasn’t a ‘completely peaceful protest’

OK, so let's run this through to its logical conclusion. I asked you if you thought all those involved in violent protest on 06 January were Trump supporters. You didn't answer that part. So let's ask again. Using your logic, do you accept that all those who violently assaulted the Capitol were...

No, the riot at the Capitol on Jan. 6 wasn’t a ‘completely peaceful protest’

I watched it. The GOP congressman voted against the award of medals to recognise officers' courage; and then he appeared to pretend to make a phone call, rather than shake Officer Fanone's hand, even after he had explained who he was, and what had happened to him. Just .. wow.

No, the riot at the Capitol on Jan. 6 wasn’t a ‘completely peaceful protest’

I've looked it up on Wikipedia. Not always the most reliable source, but let's run with it. It explains in great detail that 14,000+ people had been arrested, and 25 people had died in the unrests. It says 93%+ of the protests had been non-violent. I wonder if the problem is what we mean by...

No, the riot at the Capitol on Jan. 6 wasn’t a ‘completely peaceful protest’

I don't know. There's a lot of hand-waving and whataboutery from some posters claiming that other people and other groups had violently protested. But tulc was saying that he was appalled that it had to be pointed out that the Capitol protest wasn't completely peaceful. If you agree that it...

No, the riot at the Capitol on Jan. 6 wasn’t a ‘completely peaceful protest’

hasn't he shown you, repeatedly, including by quoting LEOs, that it wasn't? What part of that are you having trouble following? Do you think that those rioting at the Capitol (OP) were all Trump supporters?

By "worked" I mean "was effective at reducing the R-rate and ultimately on the effects of (a) excess mortality and (b) severest effects of C19". On your second point, what if none of it worked, that really falls into how do you prove a negative. The evidence strongly suggests that some...

I'm not a C19 expert. The prevailing view among the experts appears to be that it's here to stay, so I think it'll be something we have to live with. As ever, the western world is likely to be able to do that first through vaccines (primary defence) and herd immunity (outcome based benefit). I...

No, the riot at the Capitol on Jan. 6 wasn’t a ‘completely peaceful protest’

We've had this discussion once. The title of the thread is: "No, the riot at the Capitol on Jan. 6 wasn’t a ‘completely peaceful protest’" tulc, who started it, was clearly pointing out that some people were defending it as something it wasn't. If you agree that there was [actually quite a lot...
