  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Is air conditioning not common in your churches?

What Did You Get Last Sunday?

Fair point. We can't even compare East and West in terms of time required. If my services go over an hour, I start to get nervous that people will be upset. Although, to be fair, when they've run over by 15-20 minutes for some special reason, I've actually never heard a complaint.

What Did You Get Last Sunday?

Interesting given that Prayer C doesn't have a preface at all! Prayer D is my favorite due to its beauty and catholic nature. But it sure is looooong. I learned a new word today -- thanks!!

What Did You Get Last Sunday?

Wow. I couldn't imagine not having a Christmas Morning service. I mean, it would be lovely for me personally after all the craziness the day before and the long night. But it just feels wrong somehow. We don't have much demand, though...perhaps 30 people as opposed to 250+ for the Christmas Eve...

    ***Anglicans/Episcopalians only*** Confirmation vs Reception

Yep. This used to be the practice in TEC. If you had been confirmed by a bishop we believed to have a claim to apostolic succession, you were received. Otherwise, you'd be confirmed. Given our strange and mushy theology of confirmation, we tend to now see Confirmation more about being a mature...

Thanks for the suggestions. I have two of the three in my library. I don't know the McKenna book but I have a bit of a weird fascination with epicleses, so I'll have to check it out. BTW, Johnson edited a relatively new follow-up called Further Issues in Eucharistic Praying in East and West. It...

There's something that feels really refreshing with this idea of Christianity not yoked to an institution. I'll be praying for your ministry today.

I expect you're right about the mileage. But at least the dean's remarks are flattering! Are you mostly doing supply work just now or is that on top of a settled position with a congregation?

Anyone up for a chat thread?

Oh my goodness. I'm so sorry. That's one of my literal nightmare scenarios! The other one is similar: asking a parishioner how so-and-so is doing (e.g. a spouse, parent, etc.) and then having to be reminded that they'd died a while ago.

I would guess I change the lectionary perhaps once a year at most. And it's always extending a reading and never swapping one out. But I wouldn't be entirely opposed to it if the need arose.

I will just say that I very much appreciate your grace in speaking of a liturgical practice that many find distasteful. Thank you!

Thanks for all this. It's a good day when I can learn something new and you've given me many good days! I would think the later dating of Ap Trad might actually bolster the hypothesis of improvised prayer in the first century or two, wouldn't it? Plus we have Justin Martyr's lines about the...

Such a cool project. And I would have thought of the ecumenism as a feature, not a bug! Liturgics as an academic field is still very heavily ecumenical. Even the traditionally "non-liturgical" churches are getting in on it these days. (N.B. Purists would likely say there is no such thing as a...

I agree with your take on the early church -- at least to the extent they believed they were consecrating anything and not just having a fellowship meal. Especially since, as we've discussed, there is historical evidence of prayers without an institution narrative and/or without an epiclesis...

Such fascinating work. Thanks for sharing! I have a real interest in the development of eucharistic prayers. I presume you've read Prayers of the Eucharist: Early and Reformed? Bradshaw and Johnson point out that the Roman Catholic Church recognizes the validity of Addai & Mari even without a...
