  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Feast of Passover 2026 & The Lords Supper

Hello. I'm a bit late joining this conversation but wanted to make a few historical/scriptural comments. For the most part, I think you have things correct on the historical timing of events in the week of the Lord's Passion, but there are a couple of historical mistakes that adjusts the...

Jesus was born on July 27, 7 BCE. Merry Christmas!

I had in my notes Mr. Simmons' request on this paper: "IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO CITE THIS PAPER IN YOUR RESEARCH, PLEASE WAIT UNTIL IT IS PUBLISHED IN BIBLIOTHECA SACRA SO THAT YOU CAN CITE THE PROPER PAGE NUMBERS IN THE PUBLISHED VERSION" (all caps original) My apologies for causing confusion and...

You know my time constraints, so I can't respond to this fully this morning. But I do want to correct you. I do not "dismiss" Clement. I simply do not agree with you on what the debated passage from his Stromata is referring to, whether birth or conception. I believe it was referring to Jesus'...

Jesus was born on July 27, 7 BCE. Merry Christmas!

Hold on a minute. The December 25 date is not my hypothesis. I didn’t calculate that date. I have no personal interest in or any particular bias toward that date. I certainly have no vested interest in it. That has been the traditional date Christendom has held for the birthdate of Jesus as far...

Actually, the debate is not what form of the word “genesis” was used, but what did the ancients mean when they used the word genesis. You are assuming that the only definition of the word is “birth.” But there are many, many examples of that same word being used to refer to “conception.” Schmidt...

My apologies for taking so long to dig out the references. As you know, Cyprian was quite a prolific writer with over 80? letters. I'll find it though, and I'll post a link if I can find one online. In Christ, Deborah

Again, the Pachons 25 (May 20) date is not Clement’s calculation for Jesus’ genesis. The only calculation he gives for any of the events in Jesus’ life is the November 18 birth, which would require a February conception. You can’t add someone else’s conception date to Clement’s birth date and...

Jesus was born on July 27, 7 BCE. Merry Christmas!

My apologies for taking so long to respond, but that was a lot to digest. We will have to agree to disagree on whether Luke was speaking of the 6th month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, or the 6th month of the year. In and of itself, trying to use the “6th month of the year” interpretation as...

Bear with me. This was a lot to digest and I'm working on it. I'll be back with a response, you brought up some interesting points. In Christ, Deborah

Jesus was born on July 27, 7 BCE. Merry Christmas!

As the old saying goes, an absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. I can think of a very logical reason why Clement might not have mentioned the date of December 25. He wasn't trying to prove or disprove that date. He came up with his calculations to prove the supremacy of Moses over the...

Jesus was born on July 27, 7 BCE. Merry Christmas!

Perhaps I should have said I don't believe the context supports a March - May conception for John, since that is all we have discussed so far. I don't see any justification for taking verse 26 to be referring to the month of the year, as I don't believe that is the purpose of Luke's account, to...

Jesus was born on July 27, 7 BCE. Merry Christmas!

When I say “very early tradition,” I am not referring to Hippolytus but to the Apostolic Constitutions and others we haven’t even discussed yet. Granted, the Apostolic Constitutions were collected and recorded in a single body of work over a period of time, possibly beginning as early as the 3rd...

Jesus was born on July 27, 7 BCE. Merry Christmas!

Understood, but your contention was that the December 25 date can only be documented to the 4th century and therefore can be disregarded and not considered as evidence for Jesus' birth. That was the conclusion you reached, that "there is no evidence for the December 25 date." So my argument...

Jesus was born on July 27, 7 BCE. Merry Christmas!

I don’t believe the evidence supports that, no. I have reconsidered your justification for taking that verse as referring to the sixth month of the year, and while I understand your calculation of the birthdate would give you reason to lean that direction, I am still not persuaded. Let me offer...
