  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

    Lesbian Methodist Minister

Correct. Keep in mind that Rev Dammann earlier in the year also violated this, but got off on a "technicality" (which has been beaten to death a number of times on other forums). As such, at the Conference some clarifying language was added in the BoD to keep that from happenning again...

What is your view on Biblical Infallibility/Inerrancy?

I agree. In fact, I was at another website discussing the differences in order to do just that, when I decided it was too much work. :o I realized that I'm more interested in people's feelings and impressions, rather than exact arguments (since I only decided to work with 5 options!)...

What is your view on Biblical Infallibility/Inerrancy?

I used to think I followed the inerrancy/infallibility crowd, but as I came to study more and learn many of the cultural meanings, I realized that my opinioin was not "classical" infallibility thinking.

    beliefs?

Well, I'm not Tommy, but I can give this a go. I think HEREV could give this one justice (is he TOmmy?). We believe the "real presence" of Christ in that we, as the church are the Body of Christ. Either that, or we believe that since Christ said Matthew 18:20 "For where two or three...

    beliefs?

Heh, that's a tricky one, since my Methodist pastor was brought up Pentecostal! Actually, he has made some wonderful judgement calls to re-invigorate our congregation. Still, he knows that during our "traditional" worship service he is best served to keep his hiney parked behind the podium...

    beliefs?

Definitely more Charismatic/Pentecostal, though any good Methodist should condede that "anything is possible in the Lord". I, for one, do not see the need for it, neither do most in my congregation, hence the Spirit does not respond to us in that way. In some church communities, that may be so...

Is there anything God cannot do?

We err when we think God changes (even in the Bible, when God "changes his mind"). Since God is outside of time, his past, present and future are all part of him. He does not change, rather we perceive a different part of him. Similarly, when we perceive he changes his mind, he impacts events...

    Baptism? Necessary for Salvation?

Water is necessary as an act of obeisence, but not "absolutely necessary" (i.e. someone who accepts Christ in the middle of a desert then dies is probably just fine.) There *is* a seperation of water and Spirit. For example, many denomination (Methodists, Catholics) baptize infants. No...

    beliefs?

Many of the differences aren't over beliefs, but rather traditions. Part of the Methodist split from the Anglicans was due to the (at that time) Anglican tendency to cater to the elite, rather than minister to the poor. I think John Wesley correctly identified a problem, correctly identified a...

    Help me understand

HOPE, or some such empty (in their worldview) sentiment. I was grumbling about this at our annual conference, and I made a few comments within earshot of some of the Bishop-hopefuls like "If Jesus didn't rise from the dead, none of us are gonna either!" and "All I ask is that whomever the next...

What is a typical Methodist service like?

Our UMC church has three distinctly different services. The 2nd service is similar to what has been described above, with robes, choirs and bell choirs, call to worship, and a vaguely Anglican feel. FWIW, because of our demographics, it also has the smallest attendance. Our first service...

    Help me understand

Spong's problem is he sees "inconsistencies" because he probably thinks the Bible was written in English. If he were to actually *study* the bible, get some information about translation issues and culture, he may find that most of the inconsistencies he sees are translation and cultural issues...

    Help me understand

As a UMCer who is greatly disturbed by this trend, I was happy to hear that this concern is an issue with the UMC, and they are discussing addressing it at the seminary level, to the point that I believe they have started withholding funds (or at least threatening to withhold funds) from some...

    Giving up Christian Rock.

I think agressive music is a "mindset" thing. I still struggle with a lot of Christian rock, because (I know...I know) it all sounds the same to me. There are 4 bands out there, Michael W Smith, Relient K, Third Day and Kutless. If you're not listening to one of these, then whomever you are...

    women as pastors

I have no problem with a woman pastor, priest, bishop, or whatever. Galatians 3 2I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by observing the law, or by believing what you heard? Galatians 3 5Does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you because you...
