  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

    Question for Mormons

Skylark1 writes: I am sure that Joseph learned some German from Neibaur. However, I do not know how much actual discussion of the Kabbalah occured (no one does). I myself have at least a dozen (some quite old) Kabbalistic texts packed away some place, and I have read several of them, but this...

    Faith was Created by....

Phoebe Ann writes: You are reading far more into this than is relevant to the issue at hand. This statement does not reverse the LDS standard works that I have quoted. You may want it to, to support your proposed point of view, but clearly, in the hierarchy of LDS doctrine, the scriptural texts...

    Question for Mormons

Skylark1 wrote: You have to be very careful when using Owens. He is attempting to explain the King Follett Discourse in terms of Kabbalah, but this can be shown to be completely erroneous. This isn't to say that Joseph didn't have any contact with Kabbalah (through Neibaur or some other source)...

    Faith was Created by....

Well, this depends. Assuming we accept this interpretation of scripture (three degrees in the Celestial Kingdom), LDS theology suggests that there is no separation between these three degrees - that is, God the Father is in all of them - they are in the same "place", and there isn't any barrier...

    Faith was Created by....

On the other hand, President Kimball's comments aren't binding doctrine, while the Section I quoted from the D&C is. Clearly, LDS theology allows unmarried people into the Celestial Kingdom. I might go further than this, though. In 1957 Joseph Fielding Smith (past Prophet and President of the...

    Faith was Created by....

But this simply avoids the issue. It sidesteps it. If no one deserves God's mercy, then it is only because God created them that way (knowing ahead of time via omniscience everything that would happen to all of his creation). I am a Mormon. It is one of our basic theological positions that...

    Faith was Created by....

Phoebe Ann writes: What is ironic to me in this statement, is that by contrast, Phoebe's vision of God comes across as either cruel or impotent. After all, God created all mankind (in her view). He could have created them so that they would be righteous (all of them). How could He do this? If...

    Faith was Created by....

Just a couple of comments. First, I look at the notion of hope. Faith isn't "belief". We all are familiar with the passage about the demons who believe (James 2:19: "You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder."), but are not saved. The opposite of...

    The temple recommend

Just a couple of comments. First, going back to the original topic, I think that, in general, the ordinances are considered to be valid. (I think that there might be one or two exceptions to this rule - which would not be common). Temple recommends come in two types. One is for living ordinances...

    Sincere question for Mormons

A couple of quick comments for wizeone, who wrote: Mosiah 15:1-5 is a text which is very similar in nature to the definition of faith given at Chalcedon. The Definition discusses the relationship between the two natures of Jesus Christ, and reads in part: The question is how does God become...

    Seasonal Decorations - Mormon Style

GodsWordisTrue - Would you please answer my questions first? I'll reiterate them for you: So we have Person A and Person B. Both believe that God has given them the same set of commandments. Person A obeys God, and Person B does not. Do you think that Person A loves God more than Person B? Ben

    Seasonal Decorations - Mormon Style

GpdsWprdisTrue writes: I am not sure I follow you here. We could list the requirements of "worthiness" I suppose by listing the requirements of a Temple Recommend (not that different from the commitments made at baptism): Let's see - chastity (marital fidelity and the avoidance of premarital...

    Seasonal Decorations - Mormon Style

What's funny about this thread is that it implies (in its title) that what is seen in the entrance lobby of the main administration building at BYU (whether or not it is known as the "Lord's University") is typical of all LDS members everywhere. In fact, my home has the more traditional...

Temple marriage is the key to eternal life?

Skylark1 writes: No, and I have no idea. My copies of the Improvement Era don't go back past about 1957 or so. Ben
