    Encryption

Who uses encryption in what? We all use it in some ways. If you're talking about email, I also use it (I'm actually quite impressed lately with services like Facebook that will encrypt what it sends to you). Rather than seeing someone encrypt their physical emails or other data on their drives...

Obamacare and its quietly anti-Catholic provisions

The post office ran great until the ridiculous pension requirements placed on it in 2006 by the Bush administration with the expressed goal of eliminating it. The bulk of the problems with social security and medicare are a result of their intent to fund retires for an anticipated 2-3 years, not...

Obamacare and its quietly anti-Catholic provisions

Amen brother! ACA is a great step for access (one of the two major problems with our current system, the other being efficiency) and will help many get the care they need. For those of us who already have insurance it won;t do much, but it isn't designed to benefit us either. Hopefully this...

Obama declares support for gay marriage

Good for him. Now hopefully he'll act on that affirmation.

    Ubuntu Question

Given the graphical libraries involved with the desktop GUI I'm not sure this would be possible without installing the GUI... Well, it would be possible but to get all the dependencies met would be much more difficult then just going ahead and installing Gnome.

    Windows 8

Mostly true, there are still alternatives that can be [relatively] easy to implement in Linux. Not so in Windows.

Does anyone here still use DOS?

Until XP DOS was actually the underlying operating system of consumer versions of Windows (95, 98, ME). Since XP however it has been replaced completely and is only emulated by the Windows command line. So, to answer your question, no, DOS is no longer used except for a few hobbyists who run...

    Windows 7

Try Ubuntu on a Netbook. We had the same issue with my wife's netbook so I put Ubuntu on it. It has been GREAT!

    Windows 8

Anyone else tried one of the Windows 8 previews yet? Thought? Personally, I don't care for it. It feels like they've tried to hard for a UI that is different instead of a UI that is functional. I've put in about 20 hours or so with it and its just sloppy.

    Linux problem

Right on. I'm down to only one computer in the house which is how I can make it a Mac. After have Win 7 for a while I don't think I could ever use Windows again. NTFS is ancient, too darn slow unless every file you have is bigger than 2GB, and fragments worse than a windshield that's been hit...

promoting abortion is a mortal sin - voting for a pro-abort is promoting abortion

What I find funniest of all in these arguments is individual's insistence that their "pro-life" candidate, which is only pro-life on 1 out of, if I remember correctly, 7 tenants, is really pro-life at all. The GOP will never do anything about pro-life as to actually act on it would significantly...

    Linux problem

Frankly, on my Desktops I've gone all Mac and my servers are all Ubuntu. That said, I use Mint, Ubuntu and OpenSuse in VMs all happily. Have you looked at OpenSuse?

    Linux problem

I would try a different Distro. I've seen similar driver problems over the years with new hardware and although they're almost always taken care of over time the only quick fix is to use something different...
