  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Are modern Bible translations as good as the old ones? KJV versus ESV versus NKJV

Wow. Looks like KJV-Onlyism is alive and well here on Christian Forums. So many of these faulty arguments have been addressed over and over by reputable scholars. I would recommend this article by Daniel Wallace: Why I Do Not Think the King James Bible Is the Best Translation Available Today |...

Is it possible to have a rational discussion about Bible versions...

Sorry, it's been a busy few months since the last time I checked into this forum. I'll try to give as concise answer to this reply as I can... Since the King James Bible was published in 1611, archaeologists have found thousands more manuscripts of biblical material, much of it considerably...

    The calvinism versus arminianism debate.

I am reflecting on the interesting fact that this thread began with a question about whether the debate between Arminians and Calvinists was fruitful...and how 8 pages of debate ensued.

Is it possible to have a rational discussion about Bible versions...

Heck, even Martin Luther, who was a giant in the early days of vernacular translations of Scripture, indulged in some manipulation of the text to achieve his agenda. He famously added the word "alone" (allein) to Romans 3:28, so the text read, "So halten wir nun dafür, daß der Mensch gerecht...

I love the RSV. That being said, I have an interesting book from several decades ago, by a Church of Christ preacher, in which he excoriates the RSV as the single worst fraud ever perpetrated on the people of God. I'm not even kidding... And there's a well-known story of how, when the RSV was...

Is it possible to have a rational discussion about Bible versions...

P.S. I always love it when someone says, "Just google it." As if that is the end of the discussion. "Everyone on the internet knows the NIV is corrupt...just google it." And that's when the crazy starts. :argh:

Is it possible to have a rational discussion about Bible versions...

Okay, now I'm intrigued... First, what was Robert Preus's agenda at Concordia? (I've got Preus's little book about the Theology of the Book of Concord sitting right in front of me at the moment.) Second, how does that relate to the "corruption" of the NIV? You've piqued my curiosity...

See, this is exactly what I'm talking about. Why can't you simply say, "I don't care for the NIV"? Why does the version you don't like always have to be "corrupt"?

The CEB is quite popular in the United Methodist church I serve as Director of Music Ministries. I go back on forth on the CEB myself. Sometimes I really like a particular rendering, and then other things really grate on my ear, especially when read aloud. "The Human One" (instead of "Son of...

Is it possible to have a rational discussion about Bible versions...

Here are a couple pictures from my Grandma's Bible. If you look closely at the selection from Matthew, you'll see the old Latin term "supersubstantial bread" in the Lord's Prayer. And in the selection from Psalms, you will notice the traditional Catholic numbering of the Psalms. So the one most...

I like the OSB a lot. The study notes in that version give a lot of great perspective on Eastern Orthodox theology and interpretation of Scripture. And it's beautifully illustrated!

I'll go ahead and share what I would consider my Top 5 Translations that I'm currently most interested in (in no particular order of importance)… Holman Christian Standard Bible English Standard Version New Revised Standard Version King James Version New International Version

Is it possible to have a rational discussion about Bible versions...

Yeah, things can get a little ugly on those forums. If you disagree with anything they claim, you'll usually be bombarded by memes, and often ridiculed. Seriously, I once took issue with something a KJVO guy said on YouTube, and he immediately responded by calling me an idiot, and informing me...

Is it possible to have a rational discussion about Bible versions...

Welcome to the group! I agree, it's always useful to compare different translations. And your point about original languages is pertinent, even though that's one area where KJVOs often attack anyone who favors any modern version: they claim that there's no such thing as "original...

Is it possible to have a rational discussion about Bible versions...

My grandmother's old Bible is a Douay-Rheims from about 1911 (there's no publication date in it, but the Imprimatur is from 1911, I think). It's really interesting reading the old footnotes, with their pretty heavy counter-Reformation stance. I had it rebound several years ago, so it's a...
