  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

    Which version to read through?

In the case of a Sunday school youth class, stick with whatever translation the lead pastor uses, but keep a copy of a modern language translation around for casual use to illustrate passages in modern language and idiom. I have found that any pastor worth the title will see that certain...

    Is Christian a bad word?

I am speaking from my own experience here, but everyone I've ever met who claimed to be a "follower of Jesus" (probably a dozen or so) refused to accept His divinity. Yes, they follow the Man, Jesus, and they all claimed to be living good and moral lives, but they found His teachings about...

    a down to earth bible?

I like the New King James, although the first time I read the Bible through it was in the New International Version. I also often refer to BibleGateway and eSword for other translations and reference. (I would be wary of the New International Readers Version, as it tends to sterilize a lot of...

    Roots of the Faith???

I think it is good to understand why non-denominational churches can even exist after so many centuries of the Christian world being "dominated" by the big denominations. I also think anyone can learn a lot from understanding who often Christians were persecuted by other Christians throughout...

    Which version to read through?

As mentioned by others, for a more literal translation use NASB, for poetry refer to KJV or NKJV, and for modern language go to the NIV or NLT. Like others, I refer to eSword all the time, and I have gone ahead and sprung for the NKJV module so I could better study what my pastor likes to use. I...

    Is Christian a bad word?

I have a friend who is an elder at a mainline church, but his curiosity and doubt has led him to be more "open-minded" (his words) about his faith. So he refers to himself as a "follower of Christ" rather than a Christian. (And honestly, if the priest at his church knew his views on the origins...

    Churches Loosing Members.

I agree. I believe some people who actually leave church for good (as opposed to those who move to a new town and/or switch to a different church) are leaving because they don't feel like they are getting, as you call it, "the biblical Christ." The biblical Christ preached salvation and love, to...

    Churches Loosing Members.

Actually, the term Apostle is used to denote someone who is "sent out," an ambassador. Jesus selected the Twelve to be the ones who would go out and spread the Gospel. As noted, when Judas betrayed Jesus, another Apostle was selected by casting lots. Ironically, that's the same method the Roman...

    Churches Loosing Members.

From the few bits I've read from Barna and his co-author Frank Viola, they are both very much into non-traditional churches. Viola's web site is a wealth of articles and advice for those want to run house churches. We should keep in mind that while Viola has no formal training in ministry...

    Churches Loosing Members.

The self-serving aspect of religion has always existed. Witness the stories of Simon Magus (Acts 8:9-25) and Ananias and Saphira (Acts 5:1-11). Even today people choose a church on how it fits with their beliefs rather than how it will help them grow spiritually. I know from my own experience...

Should there even be a non-denom forum?

It seems very clear to me that the articles you have thus far quoted are conflating Christian ecumenicalism -- whose goal is one world Christian church without differences of dogma or doctrine -- with interfaith efforts that are aimed at ending the prejudices that have kept non-Christians from...

    Churches Loosing Members.

Our little church split from a larger non-denominational church in our area when our pastor (who, as Faith_Warrior often notes, comes from a Baptist background) had a difference of doctrinal opinion with his senior pastor. Nonetheless, when I came to this little church, I found Spirit-filled...
