  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Romans 9, neither Calvinist nor Arminian

However, from the days of Calvin et. al., theologians have been teaching a doctrine of election that Paul never intended. We're going back 2,000 years to right a wrong and clear up this false doctrine of election. It hurts too many good people.

    Paul's teaching in Romans 9

Bling, it's clear Paul is thinking about, talking about, lamenting about non-believing Jews and why they won't come to faith in verses 1-5. Then he launches into a hypothetical argument about why they should believe, why they're wrong not to accept Christ. Your point is that the Gentile...

    Paul's teaching in Romans 9

You and I do seem to largely agree, yes. My statement above is not accurately quoted though. I am not saying Romans 9 is not talking about election of nations, I am saying that it is not talking about any un-elect nations. I think it's a big difference. I am not against saying that God has...

    Paul's teaching in Romans 9

Thanks Steve. I looked at your link and then looked up the book on Amazon. Do you have this book? From what I could glean it doesn't seem that this author does a thorough examination of Romans 9. Am I wrong?

    Paul's teaching in Romans 9

Hi Bill, sorry I never responded to your post. This old thread just god dredged up somehow and the topic is hot again so I thought I would finally respond. In The Justification of God, (p.58) Piper laments that "It is a remarkable and telling phenomenon that those who find no individual...

    Paul's teaching in Romans 9

Excellent post Gregory! The strong prevailing doctrine of predestination is incredibly evident. Both in B.C. history as well as up to the modern day. But this predestination teaching wasn't a Christian/Calvinistic type of predestination, it was a Jewish predestination. Jews absolutely believe...

    Paul's teaching in Romans 9

This may very well have been the effect on the gentile believers reading Paul's letter, but that's not what's at issue. What we're trying to discern is what did Paul mean?!? And to do that we need to rely on what Paul was thinking about when he said what he said. And to that end: Yes, that is...

    Paul's teaching in Romans 9

Ah, then it is more aligned with Ephesians 1, especially verse 11.

Romans 9, neither Calvinist nor Arminian

sdowney, your last remark in this quote is offensive. You are stating that non-Christians are dogs and are not God's children. Neither God, Jesus nor Peter are saying that. They may be using a metaphor to teach a lesson, but they are saying that if you act like a dog, do not expect to be treated...

Romans 9, neither Calvinist nor Arminian

Well, after a much closer inspection, this paragraph points to maybe we do agree?

Romans 9, neither Calvinist nor Arminian

Who was that to expos? It would seem like it's to me, but the conclusion at the end about Romans 9 no being about predestined saved and lost shows you and I have no argument. Either way, I completely agree with you about the beauty of Romans 3 and it's connection to Romans 9 and about Paul...

Even some of the most obscure passages threaten OSAS

Thank you brotherjerry for bringing up these, the real important questions. How can I know if I am saved? It really is a simple answer. God has said that he forgives you of your sins, repent, believe, and you will be saved. God is strong enough to forgive you of all your sins no matter how bad...

Even some of the most obscure passages threaten OSAS

The whole OSAS debate makes sense only if everyone agrees to begin with that salvation is imputed immediately when one believes for the first time. And there seem to be verses going both ways, which makes me want to take a step back and look at the premises that are agreed upon. And that's where...

Romans 9, neither Calvinist nor Arminian

Hi Expos4ever, your question is a really good one. You're right to question why this is even an issue, to me it's a distraction too. But in being frustrated and not wanting this thread to go zooming off topic and in thinking about your question I realized something pretty fundamental. In our...
