  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

    Is popular sovereignty a myth?

Even if you're right, the President may still be in subjectively mortal sin, and if he dies that way, you know what will happen to him. Then there's Pope Francis's pontificate, the most disastrous one I know of in Church history. I've never admired any pope who ruled the Church during or after...

    Is popular sovereignty a myth?

But President Biden continues to support abortion despite that his bishop has warned him. That suggests obstinacy. He and many others know that popes have said that pro-abortion politicians shouldn't receive Holy Communion. But Biden still did. I won't judge the President's intentions. But I...

    Is popular sovereignty a myth?

Daisy, please convince me that Trump inherited a thriving economy. If you believe I bore false witness, you think I intended to do that? If you think I intended to do that, you seem to accuse me of sinning when you have no way to know my intentions, let alone judge them. If you must accuse...

    Is popular sovereignty a myth?

Hans, please let me reply with two points. First, you say I ranted, and I don't believe I did. But if I did, you triggered my comments by asking me not to say I was patriotic. Second, though I don't know what you believe about politics, theology, or both, you sound secular. At least your...

    Is popular sovereignty a myth?

Again, I don't mean to force anyone to become Catholic. But I need you to know why I worry about President Biden. To begin, here's 1 John 5:13-17 in the RSV, where the saint distinguishes between mortal and non-mortal sins. Catholic doctrine me that if anyone dies in unrepentant mortal sin...

    Is popular sovereignty a myth?

Dr. Jason Paul Sorens, one of my best friend, taught political science at Dartmouth. So I asked him to recommend his favorite political science. So here's what the dust jacket says about it. Since you may wonder where Dr. Sorens land on the political spectrum, he's a right-wing libertarian...

    Is popular sovereignty a myth?

I don't know what it means to be "loyal to the Constitution." But whatever that means, the Constitution is still a brilliant document I'm happy to believe in. But it's still flawed from my perspective. Christopher Ferrara, the author of "Liberty: The God that Failed," says the Constitution would...

    Is popular sovereignty a myth?

I agree with you. But Catholics believe God continues to save us on earth. Water baptism incorporates the baptized person into the Catholic Church, even when a non-Catholic baptizes him. It remits any sins the baptized person may have committed before baptism. It sanctifies his soul, too. When...

    Is popular sovereignty a myth?

No, I'm against everything the US is built on. I can be a patriotic American who still criticizes American liberal democracy. So why do I love my country? I love it because it's my nation home where I was born. It's where my parents raised me, where may family and most of my ancestors have...

Thank you. You probably are right.

    Is popular sovereignty a myth?

Hans Blaster, you'll find a 38-volume set of writings from the Early Church at in the Christian Classics Ethereal Library. I hope you see that my religious convictions determine my political ones. If some political belief is incompatible with Catholicism, I reject that belief, not my religion...

    Is popular sovereignty a myth?

Kennedy was no papal puppet when he refused to obey the Pope and the Church. Catholics aren't papal puppets if they disobey him when he tells them to sin So I cited Acts 5:29 because it says, "But Peter and the apostles answered, 'We must obey God rather than men." Biden may obey God in some...

    Is popular sovereignty a myth?

Please explain. What Pope is a bigot in your opinion? Are you suggesting that Pope Leo XIII was one because he taught that societies should be officially Catholic?

    Is popular sovereignty a myth?

Yes, some people have contradicted them, including Luther, Calvin, Zwingli, Bucer, Wesley, and many others. But some things should be clear to most CF posters. Catholicism predated Protestantism, Protestants splintered into thousands of sects, and those sects still contradict each other. If...

    Is popular sovereignty a myth?

Then please tell me what nuns you mean. Did they teach before, during, or after Vatican II? I'll be happy to quote official Catholic documents to support everything I told you just now. To begin, here's the encyclical "Quas Primas" by Pope Pius XI...
