  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

    Just Pray

I'm guessing this thread is inspired by another thread, where just keep praying as given as advice. And I was one of the people who said that, so I'll give my take here. From my experience, prayer can often times lessen anxiety over any situation--even if the situation persists in an...

    Loneliness.

Dude, you're not alone. I go through this too. Currently, I just view it as a "cross" to bear. I'd prefer to end up married, but if not, I'll be ok. I also try to remember that even though I don't have my own family--wife and kids--I've still got a family composed of friends and other loved...

    Eastern Orthodoxy

To echo what others have said, go and visit. My other suggestion is, be ok with not being fully convinced of everything. For me, part of converting was about submitting to an authority above myself--the Church. I got kinda sick of being my own god. There are still a couple things within...

    Book Club

I'd be down for it, if I can make the time for it. How often are you thinking of doing the Skype? Would it be after each book? Multiple times per book?

    Tattoos and piercings

To the OP-- Don't fret over the tattoos you already have. When I started going to an Orthodox Church I already had 8 tattoos and a lip piercing. Before becoming a Catechumen, it was highly suggested I remove the lip piercing and stop getting tattoos. I had no problem doing either. Part of...

    David Bentley Hart

I understand your dilemma regarding the Church as the "pillar and ground of truth." But I don't think this issue (life after death) can or should be something that affects your view of the Church as the "pillar and ground of truth," or your faith in a "good God." The Church has never...

    Parishes in Ohio

Sorry I can't provide much more on the parishes in Columbus. But I am fairly certain the Cathedral mentioned earlier does a mix of English and Greek during their services. Also, one of my lacrosse player's family goes to one of the OCA parishes by the OSU campus and they have said good things...

    Parishes in Ohio

Yes, the services are in English. Mind me asking why you asked about parishes in the Columbus area?

    Parishes in Ohio

Yeah, Fr. Athanasius. It is a small parish--hasn't been out of "mission" status for very long. Fr. Athanasius isn't full-time, he teaches English classes in a local school district, I believe. There are occasional joint services at the Cathedral in downtown Columbus, but they are only...

    Parishes in Ohio

St. Barnabas Orthodox Church is the only one I am personally familiar with. Good priest and friendly community. It is on the smaller side, still in an old house turned church building. It's in Sunbury, which is a little north of Columbus.

Relationship of Warrant and Claim in Maintaining Tradition?

Macarius--you stated it about as well as I think it needs to be stated: all things must be adapted to the Gospel. I think what bothers some is that the Gospel is being adapted to fit within any system. For me, as a mild traditionalist, that is the largest problem. From my perspective, based...

    OT: cheap beer

Can't drink beer anymore, but when I could I never went the cheap way. And the darker the better--definitely a stout guy. Old Rasputin Imperial stout may be my favorite, although Guinness is a close second (especially on tap in Dublin). Nowadays my body will only tolerate ciders and whiskey...

OCA Priest Has Crossed The Line!

Honestly, I'm trying to figure out why this article stokes such a response Greg. Given that I do not know the priest who wrote this, I cannot judge his intentions. Just reading the article, without any preconceived notions about what his underlying purpose is leaves me nodding my head in...

    What're y'all watchin' right now?

Gurney--you should check out Sons of Anarchy. I get the "biker gang" thing, but it's just the setting. Kurt Sutter did a pretty solid job of writing for the show and it plays out more like a Shakespearean tragedy. There were definitely some down points to the writing (season 3 and the way...

    What're y'all watchin' right now?

Football on the weekends (college and NFL) and hockey when its on NBCSN. Sons of Anarchy, Walking Dead, Graceland (season finished a few weeks ago), Covert Affairs (season finished a little while ago), Suits (season ended a little while ago), The Arrow, Haven, and The Strain (season ended last...
