  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

    Photo of a Jinn?

I don't believe that, I'm afraid, Eliza. Having studied Islam for approaching 10 years now, having read the Qur'an (in Arabic), studied the hadith, sira and tafsir literature, I conclude that Muhammad was a talented storyteller, yes, but a prophet, no. My PhD is in this whole area ... four years...

    Photo of a Jinn?

I agree that stories of jinn are widespread in folklore. For example, the story of Iblis and Adam in the Qur'an has come in from folklore (note it occurs 7 times with variants, probably reflecting how well known it was in pre-Islamic Arabia).

will digital cameras ever be as good as film cameras?

I agree that a print at 11x14 may be sharp (although only to an extent, unless you have used off-camera sharpening as well), but there are limits to the scale it can be blown up. Furthermore, a 5MP point and shoot will struggle capturing the full range of detail in most outdoor scenes, for...

    photoshop help - urgent

Hi Talie, I'm using Photoshop CS2 and it's really easy; use the lens flare tool (located under the Filter->Render menu). Have a play around to get the exact effect you want. Andy http://www.lakedistrictdesktops.com/

    Photo of a Jinn?

You have to remember how "real" jinns are in folk-Islam worldwide. A friend of mine noted how on his travels in Muslim North-Africa, he came across marketsellers who had pet jinn for sale in little cages. They were, of course, invisible :-) Andy

    Recommendation

The Canon Powershot series are good, robust cameras. Have a browse at "Digital Photography Review" to compare prices, features etc.

    digital cameras

Canon make some great kit --- I've recently upgraded to an EOS300D (well beyond your price point, I know --- I had to save for a year!) But their "point and shoot" models are also generally excellent across the range.

    Point & shoot digital cameras?

I'd echo the Canon recommendations -- they build good, solid kit and as a company with their roots in the film camera business, know what they're doing. Can't go wrong with a Canon :-)

    Favorite subjects

Definitely nature; I try not to have people at all in my shots. Usually I prefer to shoot wide (18-22mm). I'm also beginning to experiment with macro shots (again, nature).

    Kind-of Neat

Starting close to home is the way to go photographically. Snap away at the family then, when you're more confident, you can try other folks.

A couple of my Autumn Pics

I like the posts in the snow particularly. The first is also good, but could possibly just do with the contrast tweaking up a tiny bit. (But it's still a nice shot).

    My first attempt

Good start. Two tips: go in tighter and reduce depth of field on the flowers.
