  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

    Looking for a piano concerto

How about the Alkan concerto for Solo piano? It has no orchestra; just piano the whole way through! (nearly 50 minutes!)

    Mahler music

His music is in fact nothing like Mozart; it's on a massive scale; uses massive climaxes and is often incredibly emotional, in some ways like Wagner. I prefer Mahler; I may even do my dissertation on him! The first half of his 8th symphony is a setting of that great hymn Veni Creator Spiritus...

    Shostakovich

Has anyone read Ian Macdonald's The New Shostakovich?

    Origin of Man

Look up Papal infallibility; Humani Generis IS NOT by Rome's own definition, an infallable encyclical.

    Some post-confession questions.

I suspect some preists will be in favour of using paper; but depending on the preists' personality he may in fact think that unnecessary. The main thing is to be comfortable you have confessed all you can and done your best to reconcile yourself to God. God will accept this.

    Some post-confession questions.

In John Pridmore's book 'Gangland to Promised land', a preist told him one thing which has stuck with me since; something like 'Confess to me all the sins that make you feel guilty'. John, a former thug, with memories of such a sinful past, did this; confessing all those sins for which he felt...

    Origin of Man

To the best of my understanding, Humani Generis is not an infallable encyclical. I have to admit this is a published opinion from Rome the content of which I was unaware; but it is not one I personally agree with. I tend to avoid the matter; since it is one where I cannot agree with many...

    Catholic Apologetics Guild

An evangelical style interpretation of the bible is so dangerous that I think many Catholics go too far the other way and ignore scripture in favour of earthly created rules. I'm interested in Catholic Apologetics

    Origin of Man

Simple answer: -The point at which homosapiens became humans is for God to know -Adam and Eve did not exist, but the principles of sin their story embodies exist in every one of us. True answer: I don't have a clue!

    Smoking

Good for you! Regarding the Pope's habit, I don't know the details; but my parish preist seemed to be pleased!

Can I Come Back To Catholosism

Firstly, lets get one technicality understood. You were baptized into the Catholic faith as a child therefore you are technically Catholic. Having been baptized, you are a member of the Catholic church. Joining a Catholic church is not necessarilly easy. I hope it would be very different for...

    Smoking

I guess to be honest, I wouldn't be able to question someone's morals as a light smoker. I'd just be concerned about the wisdom of something so detrimental to one's health. I would also be worried that a safe habit, due to the addictive nature of the substance in question, could turn into one of...

    Smoking

I do believe Pope Benedict smokes. Whether excessively I have no idea! My parish preist smokes excessively (argh...) and my school chaplain smoked too. I do believe many clergy enjoy tobacco. I can't stand the stuff and am very happy if it's being gradually phased out of public places in...

    Liturgy of the word

When seperate readers are used for the first (old testament) reading and the second (new), in a secular hall in which a parish Mass is held every week, which of these is correct? 1. The first and second reader both go to the lectern together having bowed together to the altar? 2. The first...
