  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

    The Quartodecimans

I've been working on translating Dionysius Exiguus, and while going through the letter to Petronius, something amusing struck me, and I thought I would share it. Most people have heard of the Quartodecimans, though many have no idea what that even means, or who it refers to. The Quartodecimans...

Lucifer is not the proper name of Satan

Comparing modern historical researchers to first-century Pharisees is just another emotional ad hominem deflection. It doesn’t change the factual reality. Dismissing standard historical methodology as 'hearsay' because the original autographs don't exist is a self-defeating argument. If we...

Lucifer is not the proper name of Satan

Yes. I think Jude incorrectly used Enoch as Scripture when it is not. It was composed in the third century BCE. It was not composed by the actual Enoch. It is an apocryphal and pseudepigraphal text. Jude also cites the Assumption of Moses, which is likewise a first-century Jewish apocryphal and...

Lucifer is not the proper name of Satan

That's a really petty and childish response. I've read the literature that I'm talking about. You haven't provided any source material. They provide hundreds of works on the subject. They fully analyze works I suspect you don't even know exist. They are college professors with decades in the...

Lucifer is not the proper name of Satan

By "generic source," I am equating it to them citing it as a secondary source. Paul alludes to Plato and others. It's not out of character for learned men to cite sources other than holy scripture to make their arguments. You'll have to provide solid evidence of interpolation for the calendar...

Lucifer is not the proper name of Satan

That would necessarily imply that the sun and stars were destroyed as well. Their creation followed the creation of a void and dark earth along with the heavens. So, I would have to disagree with that take on it, just based on the context. I could accept the possibility of an inhabited earth...

Lucifer is not the proper name of Satan

Yes, I'm intimately familiar with 1 Enoch. The academic consensus, particularly in the field of Qumran studies, is that it was composed around the third century BCE. At the very least, it predates the Qumran secession, because their calendar system with its 364 days is very clearly built on its...

Lucifer is not the proper name of Satan

I can agree with both of those points of view, having studied the topic at length. Per Job, Satan is clearly subordinate to God, despite any theories of rebellion. His original sin, as far as can be told from Scripture, was that he lied to the woman. He was put in the garden by God. But he...

Jesus was born on July 27, 7 BCE. Merry Christmas!

I can't agree with your 8 BCE conclusion—I think it contradicts other evidence concerning the Nativity—but I commend you for at least calculating the dates correctly. Few ever do. Although, there is compelling evidence to suggest that August 4th isn't the correct date for the temple's...

Lucifer is not the proper name of Satan

While Tiglath-pileser III died a natural death, his physical resting place faced a bizarrely violent fate that perfectly mirrors the imagery of being "cast out of thy grave" and denied the peaceful glory of other kings. In Assyria, a king's palace was his "house" of burial—they were...

Lucifer is not the proper name of Satan

If you read the entire section, and not just the Lucifer part, you'll find that the reference refers to Tiglath-pileser, the Assyrian king who ruled over both Assyria and, in his last three years, Babylon as well. Isaiah plainly states the context: the year Ahaz died (Isa. 14:28). That's when...

Paul' Gospel of Grace - Salvation by Faith Alone & OSAS

It's always the avenue of denial to claim that a person in these scenarios isn't a "real Christian." But I'll reiterate. There is no forgiveness outside of Christ. If the person in the parable has been forgiven his debt, then the person in the parable is a person in Christ. And when that person...

Paul' Gospel of Grace - Salvation by Faith Alone & OSAS

I tell you what. I'll love those I come into contact with. I'll forgive. You do otherwise. And we'll see what's what when we both stand before God.

Paul' Gospel of Grace - Salvation by Faith Alone & OSAS

Mat. 18:23–35 — Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants. And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents. But forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his...

Paul' Gospel of Grace - Salvation by Faith Alone & OSAS

This is what they call cherry-picking, or confirmation bias. Perhaps even cognitive dissonance. A properly objective view sees these passages and the others. You are only telling half the story. But that's typical of certain types of doctrine. It's not a coincidence that the church has split...
