  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hell doesn't exist and there is no eternal suffering, instead bad peolle just cease to exist

I hope this is true, though I doubt it. Every Bible teacher I've studied under has taught that Hell is a real place. They've provided Scriptural support for that position, though I'm drawing a blank at the moment... What comes to mind immediately is the parable with the rich man thirsting for even a drop of water to alleviate his pain. Parables aren't always meant to be taken literally, though. I also think of the Lake of Fire in Revelation, but many of the passages in Revelation are only symbolic. Those pieces of evidence aren't very compelling on their own, I'll admit.

I don't know; I'd have to do some research.

If it were true, it would certainly erase my fears about not being saved and suffering excruciating torture for eternity...

We have to remember that blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is an unforgivable sin. We can also understand that God forgives in ways He knows & we do not ( Matthew 12:30-37 in relation to all of Matthew 12:1-50.

I try to remember the golden rule ( Matthew 7:1-12) & the Lord’s commandments ( Matthew 22:36-40) in my understanding of this & not presume my limited scope in relation to God ( Romans 9:14-18).

How does this relate to what I was saying about the issue of whether Hell exists? (I don't mean that in a rude way. I'm just confused, sorry.)
I mean that if someone is guilty of the unforgivable sin then where else will they end up but in hell? I don’t know precisely what blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is ( I can think of examples like say an unrepentant murderer but that’s it).

There are varied theories on that.

Are you saying that you believe that only those guilty of the unforgiveable sin go to hell?

I'm sad to say I have read this article and many others like it before.

To answer the questions posed there:
I have not repented of my sins. I'm no longer the person I used to be (in a sense), but that's because I've become more sinful and doubtful with age. If the Holy Spirit is in me, I see no inward or outward evidence of that. I rarely read the Bible outside of church, and I don't obey its commands as I ought. I don't share the gospel because my fear of being judged is greater than my love for others.

Given all of that, I would say the obvious answer is: No, I'm still dead in my sin.

Well, the theory posited by OP is that they do not "end up" anywhere but are instead destroyed.

I would agree with you, though. I think Hell is a real place.

It worked as a tool for the institutional church for centuries, and failing that, there was always burning at the stake to maintain order.

Since I don’t know what that sin is precisely, I don’t know. I just know the Lord says that there is an unforgiven sin (referring to Matthew 12:30-37).

I take this to mean you don't believe in a literal Hell? Are you saying it's a scare tactic invented by church leaders to maintain order?

See post 734. Human power always uses fear to control (and they employed a good bit of torture also)

Believe in the Lord ( John 3:16). He helps us when we are confused ( Mark 9:23-24).

My opinion would be that none of the rest will work, without repentence.

You will be forgiven, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” - 1 John 1:9".

You can pray for understanding about what sin is, and what yours are, You can look out for people in real life who are the way you wish to be, people with faith that you desire to have, and then pray to be made like them.

Believe in the Lord ( John 3:16).
I already believe in the Lord. However, even the demons believe and shudder, so that's not much consolation to me.

There is definitely a difference between so-called "saving faith" and mere knowledge. The former produces real transformation, which I have not experienced.

I later added Mark 9:23-24.
