We have labor shortages in those fields of work where those other than US citizens fill the void. It's not about cheap labor, it's about labor period. There were farmers offering deceit wages, free dwelling and 401k plans and still couldn't get Americans to work. And yes, we are in need of legal migration in this country. We still have labor shortages. No one disputes that.

Then fight to fix it.

I don't think it's the wages, it's the type of work.
Moreover given slavery and various immigrants the US brought in to do that work, the only time Americans really did that kind of work was during The Great Depression and the Dust Bowl.
Moreover given today, kind of hard to raise wages in this environment of tariff induced cost increases.

I don't think it's the wages, it's the type of work.

If a type of work is looked down upon, unpleasant etc you have to pay a premium for labor. I know, farmers being exposed to any kind of upward pressure on labor costs is horrifying.

Because they are illegal they have no issue with it. You think these people are going to be good with maintaining a slave class as citizens? Why would we want that again, why would they?

The obvious solution is farmers deal with economic realities that they voted to deal with by having their cheap illegal easily exploited labor deported.

If you have a pathway of citizen for them, then presto-chango, they are not illegal. I don't know about "slave class" specially if that pathway comes with worker protections to keep at bay rules like Texas who wanted to legally limit water breaks.
