  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I’ve always been told that federal and state grants are just a small portion of PBS funding. Must not be true
Again, it wasn't PBS that shut down. It was the NJ public TV broadcaster which used the name "PBS NJ".

Funding for PBS member stations included significant funding from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) which is a non-profit that is primarily funded by the federal government, or at least it was. The budget reconciliation act zeroed funding to the CPB and the CPB is currently winding down their operations.

Doesn't change anything about what was said.

It's some sort of streaming "device"? (I don't have any streaming.)
Roku is a particular brand of smart tv, with smart meaning wifi enabled with certain built-in apps. Roku also makes streaming devices that can be plugged into dumb tvs if they have ports (USB, HDMI, etc.).

When I lived in Manhattan, broadcast tv was problematic because the signals bounced off the buildings and got duplicated, with ghost images overlaying the main image. Before I got cable, I couldn't tell if people and monsters were supposed to have two or three eyes (I liked Dr. Who). In the mountains, signals get blocked altogether in places.

All beside the point, really. Getting the signal out is the least part of the problem. It can even come from overseas.* All streaming does is save the electric bill for a broadcast transmitter, which is usually locally funded, anyway. The effect of cutting CPB funding is on paying the production cost of the "fun" stuff--dramas, documentaries, nature programs.

Conservatives don't really understand how it works. I was listening to the news on public broadcasting before anyone ever thought of CPB and I expect to continue to do so now that it''s gone.

*Does anybody still remember Wolf Man Jack?

I remember him. Im still not seeing though why this is a taxpayers responsibility. Especially when all those things are found everywhere else.
