  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

US will ‘overhaul’ the citizenship test

I confess I'm having trouble with a couple:

So which is it? (Technically, two correct answers on the first one, and the second one could arguably be "all of the above")

That practice test is garbo.

An American pretty much accepts and agrees with the ideals behind the founding of the US and it's form of government. This is going to sound like a spoof, but listening to naturalized citizens, I get the feeling that, deep down, they were Americans before they even came here.

Wanting naturalized citizens to actually love this country before becoming part of it is pretty much self-evident. Would you want to naturalize citizens who hate the US and its form of government?
You think people who hate our country and our government are going to spend the time, money, and energy required to become a citizen? I'm now wondering how many organizations you hate that you have joined for some inexplicable reason?

The Exec branch writes laws all the time. Congress has to pass them tho.

I wonder if this test is being tweaked to fail out people who are qualified?
To be fair, I don't think that's an official practice test. I just thought it was funny that such a lousy one was linked as an example.

The test most certainly needs overhauled. There has to be a way to distinguish the natives, born right wise to this fine land from the foreign hordes defiling it.

I don't think there's necessarily anything wrong with wanting to make sure that people intending on moving here and living here have at least some sense of shared values.

We'll have to wait and see what the new questions are...
I've only ever seen documentation of one of my ancestors getting naturalized and then only the certificate where he swore to abandon all allegiance to the Kaiser (as if he'd ever lived under such a creature) and not any thing about a test, though no test should be needed for someone who risked life and limb to shoot enemies of the US for the government.
But at it's core, I don't think "assimilation is the goal" is necessarily a bad policy.
What is wrong with the culture my people have practiced for over 100 years? Why should they adopt the culture and religions of the Yankees just because they were here first? The Yankees didn't adopt the culture of the Massachuset or Wampanoac.
We (unfortunately) already seem to be producing enough America-hating people domestically without have to rely on imports.
What I find hard to understand is how they got control of the government.

Sure. Require the test to be taken in English.

Apart from exemptions for older people or disabilities, the test is taken in English, and the overall test includes a test of English.

My immigrant husband has more faith in the US system than I do and so do most of the immigrants I know who naturalized. Go to a naturalization ceremony sometime, especially in a conservative district with a judge who believes in our country’s immigration system and the Constitution. Husband and I both teared up at how he talked about the people naturalizing that day because it feels like it has become far too rare that we celebrate the diversity that made this country a “melting pot”. There were people from 20 countries in that room and a couple got gasps from the crowd because they were so unusual.

Also have to point out that screening for things like this can be very subjective and *anyone* can lie and hide things (the worst people we really want to keep out even more than normal people, that’s what background checks are for). Will they declare the US is a Christian nation and deny people based on their support for religious freedom for others? Will they decide your support for your trans cousin overseas is considered “moral turpitude”? Will donating money to Gaza end with you unable to naturalize in the US? Had to have an abortion because of a medical emergency, will you even be able to get a green card much less citizenship? All depends on the guy or gal who interviews you and how they feel.

Our immigration system is already terrifying and costly to experience. Lived through 3 years of my husband not being allowed to work or get a driver’s license and multiple interviews that required us to go hours away not knowing if we would be grilled about our relationship. Other couples had racist case workers and had to demand another person interview them because they were denied for absurd reasons. Others had caseworkers come to their house at 5AM to make sure they actually lived with their US citizen spouse.

Sorry if I’m a bit fired up, my parents voted for all of this and are guilt tripping me about being angry with them over it. But the day I married my husband was the day I could no longer quietly ignore their choices, I will protect my husband even if it means no longer having parents. It’s funny they keep trying to explain to me why I’m wrong but the mixing of biblical and historical reasoning being used on me, the child they homeschooled with Christian workbooks and never sent to college, is laughable.

It’s like they forgot how they raised me every time they tell me I need to lookup what a ~constitutional republic~ is or read about the great depression because it’s happening again (this was the funniest since I sent the link to them about it and it explained that all the support systems the current regime is gutting are what saved the country from failing and even he couldn’t spin what he was trying to say there). I know what the constitution says and that‘s exactly why I am livid nearly every day at the destruction of this country. I also know what the Bible says and don’t see an ounce of Jesus in any of the people claiming so hard that they want a Christian nation…

My husband asked me to pinpoint what exactly sent me over the edge (I was basically apolitical until 2023/24, he’s super liberal but quiet about it with a dash of right to bear arms and stuff). The ruling that declared the president king and no longer accountable to anyone, that is what caused it. Regardless of what party is in office that ruling will be the destruction of our system if we don’t repair the damage as soon as possible.

There is a way to distinguish, but it doesn't require the ancient laws of combat. The foreign hordes are the ones eating your pets.

That will always be the dream, but right now even our citizens don't have much by way of shared values any more.
We'll have to wait and see what the new questions are...

Do they hate America? Or do they just hate what conservatives want America to be?
