  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Trump dispenses with trials, orders military strike on alleged Venezuelan drug-trafficking boat (Now up to 2)

No, probably because they are useless.

There is nothing TDS about committing murder.
What the Navy did made them no more 'murders than when a soldier killed an isis terrorist in Northern Iraq.

That's not true but murder can occur during war. Even if the boat was full of illegal drugs, that would not mandate a death sentence under US law. Killing a fleeing suspected criminal is not legal unless the Naval personnel were in grave danger.

The ISIS conflict was part of the war on terror. We do not have a war against Venezuela or drugs. Plus, we don't have knowledge that the boat had any drugs on it.
Trump saying it, does not make it true.

?

There is a "war on drugs".

Something I don't think has been debated yet on this thread is whether or not there should be such a war in the first place.
The war on drugs is not a military war.

But what ever was the "war on terror?"

Congress never declared such a thing.

President Bush announced he was commencing a war on terror and Congress went along with it.

To be sure, Bush and the rest of the country was on the rebound from 9/11, but that was just the emotional side of the matter. On the jurisdictional side, there was no difference then from what Trump is doing now. But Trump doesn't need to rebound from something like 9/11 because he's got Congress already in his pocket.

Drug dealers are looking to sell their wares…they’re business-folk, with an illegal product (to be sure), but they don’t want their customers to die…while it’s horrible that they’re in this “business” it doesn’t make them “terrorists“.

Terrorists have a goal that they want to achieve by the use of their terrorism; the only goal of drug dealers is to get dollars into their own pockets.

(I know that you’re not likely to change your opinion about them being “terrorists”; that’s fine, (good even), but we all know it’s just rhetorical cover for being ruthless.)

Not a "war on terror" but Bush used that term to get Congressional approval for the AUMF.

I don't think I'd say that. The AUMF has been misused but Venezuela had nothing to do with terrorism involving the 9/11 attacks.
Intercepting drugs in the Gulf of Mexico or the Caribbean has usually been the job of the Coast Guard who are quite good at seizing drug boats.

The fact that the Coast Guard seized drug boats, captured the crew alive, and took possession of the drugs so that legal proceedings could be taken actually proves that they aren't very good at it.

It proves that launching missiles without attempting to stop the boats is murder.

You miss the point.

It doesn't matter what Trump calls it.

Trump can call it what he wants, or call it nothing at all, because Trump can do what he wants.
