Price would be determined by the wholesale cost with an add-on for operational expenses so that the stores would break even without making a profit or incurring a loss.

From AI -
Grocery stores might seem like bustling hubs of commerce, but their average net profit margins are surprisingly slim—typically ranging from 1.6% to 2.2% depending on the store type and business model.

That is .01 to .02 on the dollar -

That would be part of the cost of running such a store. It always is when running a business.
Right - who pays for those costs? Remember the Government runs on your money. - Even the State.

I imagine the stores would be run at cost.
Then how do you pay rent, utilities, repairs, maintenance, insurance and payroll?
Rent, utilities, repairs, maintenance, insurance and payroll ARE the cost referred to.

Right - who pays for those costs? Remember the Government runs on your money. - Even the State.
Those costs are added to the price of the goods, same as any store, I would imagine. These are food stores, not food banks.

Presumably, the store would operate a very thin margin. A tiny profit to hold as a reserve. No profits extracted by the owners.

The things you listed: rent, utilities, etc. are part of the normal business expenses which are included in the mark up of goods. There is no reason to think it would be any different here, just no mark up for profit.

At best mark up is .01 to .02 on the dollar.

Your 100.00 grocery bill at best would cost you $99.98

Not sure how that fairy tale reality is any better.

It's better because grocery stores don't want to locate in poor neighborhoods, leaving the only food stores bodegas, convenience stores, and dollar stores, all of which have limited selections and high prices.

That's not how math works. $0.01 to $0.02 on the dollar (1-2 % profit margin) on 100 dollars is $1 to $2, so $99 or $98.

Frankly, I don't think that is the issue. I suspect the slim profit margin is less of a problem than the capital investment. For a grocery company to open a new store, they need to buy or lease land, build or lease a building, and/or renovate space. Then there is the equipment (shelving, refrigerators, registers). It could be that the "subsidy" provided is just the capital outlay that a for-profit store would expect to earn back through marks ups over the period of the commercial paper sold to finance the opening of a new store. I have not read Mamdani's plan, if there is indeed any details provided.

Having a legal path for entry into this country is NOT an “oppressive decree”! It is a just and lawful way to stop chaos which is not of God.

...and what will Jesus say to the rich Americans who have willingly participated in the exploitation of millions of illegal immigrants?

That’s right.

However, Requiring people to not break the law is not mocking them.

What does scripture say about calling evil good?

What did Jesus say to the Pharisees when they touted the law?

What will He say to those who have broken the law to be here?

In these limited instances, a government store would give poor people a chance to buy fresh healthy food.
There are no limited instances with the government. If they want to run one they want them all. Government has no business in the retail grocery. Why is this socialist/communistic idea so popular? Liberal ideology has cause many problems in NY how can anyone truly believe the same flawed ideology can fix it?

What other politicians besides the candidate for NYC mayor currently have this in their platform?

“Okay, you’ve gotten your chemotherapy, now off to Walmart to greet customers! Don’t be tardy or they’ll fire you and we will be forced to kick you off Medicaid!”
WalMart? Why be so soft on these shiftless sickos on Medicaid?

per atrupar

[Agriculture Sec] Brooke Rollins on farm laborers: "There will be no amnesty. The mass deportations continue, but in a strategic way. And we move the workforce toward automation and 100% American participation, which with 34 million able-bodied on Medicaid we should be able to do fairly quickly."
