Fewer international tourists are visiting the U.S. — economic losses could be ‘staggering,’ researchers estimate

Canadians who stay in the United States for more than 30 days are now required to fill out mounds of paperwork to be permitted to stay. Knowing Trump's antipathy towards immigrants, they are naturally wary that they will become the next targets.

Seems like the appealing parts of the US are "blue" on average. Maybe this is a targeted punishment?
Not really. What's redder than Florida? My in-laws live in a huge, 12,000 unit condo development in Clearwater with more activities and amenities than you could frequent in a year. They told me when we visited that half the units are owned by snowbirds, most from Canada, a few from northeastern states and Minnesota. When they leave, a lot of the clubs go on hiatus for the summer/fall.

I have thought it might be interesting to invest in one as hordes of Canadians put them up for sale. My in-laws bought in three years ago, and looking at prices, right now they are back to where they were when my in-laws bought. We could enjoy it, perhaps rent it out (although you can only do it three months at a time) and make a good profit when Trump is gone and things go back to normal.

Good point.

I forgot about Florida - as I'm often inclined to do.

I would imagine what's happening all over the US in the video below is another factor in a decline in tourism. I used to love visiting Seattle, but not anymore because it's become like this.

There’s a lot of places I’ll no longer visit for similar reasons. They’re too unsafe and the risk isn’t worth it. And I doubt I’m alone in that.

And then there are things called statistics to deal with -

The National Travel and Tourism Office’s International Visitor Forecast

The National Travel and Tourism Office’s (NTTO) International Visitor Forecast estimates total international arrivals to the United States for years 2025-2029 from the top 12 U.S. source markets, as well as overseas (which excludes Canada and Mexico) and total international visitation from all countries.

Forecast:

Total international arrivals will continue to increase solidly over the next three years and will surpass pre-pandemic 2019 visitation in 2026. According to the forecast, total international arrivals will increase 6.5% to 77.1 million in 2025, rise 10.2% to 85 million in 2026, and grow 6% to 90.1 million in 2027.

No, a forecast. Not statistics.

And a forecast from March may not be so accurate after most of the tariffs were announced in April.

This discussion highlights the challenges of finding common ground in America's future. Both sides seem firmly rooted in their positions, often leading to a lack of agreement.

It is evident that the number of foreign travelers coming to the US has declined. This decline can be attributed to policies towards close allies such as Canada and Europe. The tariffs imposed on Canada and Europe, along with the treatment of NATO members by the current administration, are significant factors in the reduced interest of Canadian and European tourists in visiting the US. Additionally, reports of customs and immigration staff behavior at airports have also contributed to this trend.

However, my liberal friend, there is little to celebrate. This situation is detrimental to America. The way some liberals are discussing it makes it appear as though this is a positive development, perhaps because they can attribute the blame to President Trump. This is genuinely disheartening. It reminds me of the period from 2004 to 2006 when any setback the United States experienced in Iraq seemed to be met with approval from liberals and Democrats.

To my conservative friends, it is important to remain objective and acknowledge facts. It appears that some conservatives have become highly defensive of President Trump to the extent that undeniable facts are disregarded. Supporting President Trump is commendable; however, it is also necessary to critique his policies when they falter. Being a supporter does not require blind allegiance; it is possible to support effective policies while also exercising critical judgment on those that are indefensible.

I don't see liberals as exactly celebrating this. Of course, it is gratifying to see the bad policies of a political opponent fail--just like with Iran.

I would imagine what's happening all over the US in the video below is another factor in a decline in tourism. I used to love visiting Seattle, but not anymore because it's become like this.

Except that view is not really true. Seattle in particular has not lost in tourism less of course the US/Canada border crossings which will have an effect.

The Numbers Are In: Seattle Tourism Is Back

Visit Seattle’s annual tourism report, released yesterday, contains information on “visitor profiles” for the first time. Many of the numbers — which pertain to domestic visitors, or 89% of visitors — are fascinating.
Though a clear plurality came here for personal reasons, fully half chose a hotel, about double the number who stayed with friends or relatives. Fifty-one percent came in their own vehicle, while 45% flew. Entertainment and outdoors were by far the main reasons for trips, far outpacing cultural, sports or business travel. Unsurprisingly, July, August and September were the most popular times to visit....
...Canada was once again expected to be the top international market, with about 1.7 million Canadians visiting last year, though border crossings are down about 30% recently because of President Trump’s steep tariffs and statements about annexing the country.

Those outside the US who choose not to come and negatively impacting tourism, do so not because of zombies in the street, but the zombie in the White house.

Actually - both. Not from a forum - not from substack - but from the Federal Government.

Please show where it was posted in March? Can't seem to find it -

And explain this little bit of fact - During the Biden Administration - well after Covid - why was there such an exponential drop in tourism?

Look at world travel data. Youll see globally that arrivals were in the middle of the recovery upswing in 2023, but not yet back to normal.

"Gratifying" is not the term I would use for a policy that is harming Americans and could result in thousands of lost jobs.

But still because of COVID.

Again from the report, international travel has rebounded, but not rebounded fully. 2020 was the real "staggering losses". During the Trump Administration. But not because of.

ok, now what do the touristy parts of Philly look like? I haven't been to Philly proper in a while, but I know that here, in its little brother, Baltimore, the touristy areas look drastically different than the bad neighborhoods.

Actually - both. Not from a forum - not from substack - but from the Federal Government.

You have to click the link to the pdf of the actual report:

It was published in March 2025, but according to the footnote at the end, was based on data from 2024:
"This forecast is based on underlying travel and economic trends through the end of 2024."

With all due respect, the forecast you are presenting appears to be irrelevant. The reality is straightforward: international travel has declined significantly over the past six months. If you believe that the decline in foreign tourism is unrelated to administrative policy, that is your prerogative to debate. However, presenting a forecast as fact is incorrect.

With all due respect also - I have not seen proof that the international travel has slowed - only news reports and pearl clutching.

If you would like to post actual numbers and facts from a reliable source - like the Department of transportation - or travel.gov

If travel has declined significantly the last six months - then it doesn't have anything to do with the tariffs that were announced just 10 weeks ago.

If you believe there is a decline in foreign travel starting six months ago (December of 2024) One month before the President took office and three and a half months before any move on tariffs, that is your prerogative. However, presenting an opinion with absolutely no facts to back it up is weaker than a forecast IMHO.
