It's not a national security threat. Trump is upset people are going to other countries to produce movies. So, he's just trying to annoy other countries. By adding Tarriff's on them . Buy now I'm guessing countries are just tired of heating Trump and ignoring him. And finding other ways to make money.

If only the governor of Los Angeles didn't decimate the filmin industry we wouldn't be in this mess. Trump should bring this up the next time he meets with the President of the Virgin Islands.

I don't know why I am still amazed at how utterly delusional this guy's trade policy is.

First, there are the logistical problems. What constitutes a "movie produced in foreign lands"? Is it where some or all of the shooting takes place? Where some of the post-production takes place? Where the score is recorded? Where the film is edited? Where some of the financing comes from? Where the primary production company is headquartered? Those may not be insurmountable problems, but creating a film is just as distributed as any manufacturing process.

Second, we export way more film and other media content than we import. WAY more. To the point where wouldn't know where to find a Chinese movie if I tried (buried in Prime Video somewhere, maybe?), while Top Gun: Maverick is so sensitive to how it'll play in China that they named neither the adversary nation nor their specific model of "fifth-generation fighters". Reciprocal tariffs have the potential to hurt us a lot more than we could ever harm anybody else.

I love many foreign films! I don’t mind the subtitles :)
Now you’ll have to pay more to see them just because the president says so. Does that sound reasonable to you? To have the prices of things arbitrarily set by the president?

No. I have a huge physical collection and many streaming services. Will that affect me?

That’s a great question. I don’t know how this tariff on foreign films is going to work with streaming services. I doubt this administration knows how this is all going to play out either.

The original Top Gun had a nondescript, unidentified "opponent" flying nonexistent MiG over the Indian Ocean. (I don't think the US Navy wanted to annoy any specific nation.)

Huh, guess I should rewatch it.

Either way, editing for China is very much a thing.

What are some examples of propaganda in foreign-made films that are "story shaping" enough to undermine our national security?

And, what evidence is there that it is extensive enough to warrant a 100% tariff?

And, then explain how this is not simply a convenient means of censorship? Remember, fear is a long utilized tactic to impose censorship.
Censorship? You have evidence of that of course?

It's one of the best ways to learn a language. Outside of shows aimed at little children, there's no dubbing industry here, because it is helps with learning English and other languages better for the older audiences.

Newsom Signals He’s Willing to Work With Trump on $7.5B Federal Tax Credit for U.S. Entertainment Industry

The governor of California has proposed a bold first-of-its-kind initiative after Trump called for a 100 percent tariff on non-U.S. made movies.

California lawmakers are currently aiming to increase the cap on its production [state] tax credit program from $330 million to $750 million a year, vastly boosting the credit to 35 percent while expanding the category of productions that qualify to include shorter TV shows, animated titles and certain types of unscripted projects.

“America continues to be a film powerhouse, and California is all in to bring more production here,” Newsom said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “Building on our successful state program, we’re eager to partner with the Trump administration to further strengthen domestic production and Make America Film Again.”
