13-year-old cancer survivor earns standing ovation as he becomes Secret Service agent during Trump speech
DJ Daniel, 13, was told he had 5 months to live 6 years ago

A 13-year-old boy who survived cancer named DJ Daniel stole the show during President Trump’s address to Congress on Tuesday night when the president introduced him to the audience and officially swore him in as a member of the Secret Service.

"Joining us in the gallery tonight is a young man who truly loves our police," Trump told the crowd. "His name is DJ Daniel is 13 years old, and he has always dreamed of becoming a police officer. But in 2018, D.J. was diagnosed with brain cancer. The doctors gave him five months at most to live. That was more than six years ago."

Daniel received a standing ovation from a majority of the crowd although some Democrats were seen on camera sitting at various times while Trump was speaking about the 13-year-old.

Trump explained that Daniel and his dad, who was in the crowd and held him up at one point during Trump’s remarks, have been on a "quest" to make his dream of becoming a police officer come true and explained that he has been made an honorary member of local police departments.
Trump then surprised Daniel with the news that his dream was becoming a reality on an even bigger stage.

"Tonight, DJ, we're going to do you the biggest honor of them all," Trump said. "I am asking our new Secret Service Director, Sean Curran, to officially make you an agent of the United States."

Curran then walked over to Daniel and presented him with a customized Secret Service badge.

"Thank you, DJ," Trump said after the crowd started chanting the young boy’s name.

It's just theater. Good for the kid for beating cancer - that's amazing. But what purpose is there to doing this during a political address other than scoring political points?

He is publicly honoring the young man and his family. I am sorry that you don't seem to appreciate that.

I thought Trump was going to put a stop to DEI hires?

Probably because I don't.

I don't see anything to "honor" about getting cancer, especially not at such a venue.

He's already been made a honory police department member (for some reason), and since he survived cancer, he can just become a cop like any other person, if he's not too smart for the job.

The young man Courageously overcame brain cancer. People like this ought to be honored and celebrated.

I don't think so.

Please don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that he should have died, or that I don't feel for him. But I see no need to "honour" them in this manner. Celebrations should stay in his family and peergroup, or at most at his local community.

I also dislike the framing of "battling cancer". It's not something that you can battle. You take the best medicine that is currently on offer and then you roll the dice. There is no personal fault in dying from cancer, just like there is no personal achievement in surviving it.

Now that this boy has survived cancer, and assuming nothing else happens, he can use this experience to get through school, join a service branch of his choice and achieve something in it. That would be something worth honoring.

I hope this political theatre doesn't put a dent in such aspirations. Then again, by the time he's old enough to get there, we'll all have forgotten him.

Is it not correct to note that all politics and almost all religion and almost all corporate activity and so on is theater ? "Actors on the stage of life" is , I think, written in Scripture though I forgot where.

Beating cancer ? Shrugs. Beating health troubles ? Old story. Natural healing has been doing so for thousands of years - perhaps specifically since shortly after the Garden of Eden had to hang a vacancy notice (so to speak). Modern money makers of course do not like people to know the truth.

It would be nice if it wasn't JUST theatre.

Millions of people beat cancer every year. Millions don't. The survival of a child is great, but hardly worthy of national celebration or honor. And using a child as a political prop always feels pretty slimy.

It was symbolic and Democrats could not even muster an ounce of compassion . PS I just saw video of at least one Democrat leader with a soul who applauded and even shed a tear.

So that's why so few Democrats stood. Different way of looking at things.

I’m a bit doubtful the poster you’re replying to is a member of or speaks for the Democratic Party with them being native to and residing in Germany.

No one “rules” the US, we are citizens not subjects.
At least some voters saw "ruling" and "controlling" as a danger. The closing of Trump's (and other conservatives) media accounts, switching to EVs, mandating paper straws, the increasing pressure on virtually any use of carbon fuel (with exceptions for jetting around like John Kerry, etc.), jailing pro-lifers and other conservatives for mere protests, you should get the idea.

A for effort getting all the talking points in, regardless of relevance.

I don't even speak for the majority of germans. We have our own displays of political spectacle like this, which I also disagree with in many cases.
